Picked up a bunch of variety singles from Publix while visting Myrtle Beach. Really like the two from Palmetto (this pale and their IPA). This has a great balance...heavy on the hops but not quite an IPA. Smooth and crisp feel. Emphasises the medium malt and light yeast finish. I'd grab a 6 pack of this next time up in that region....or have my buddy bring some down from Augusta.

Very nice pale ale that draws up amber-orange with a fluffy head and laces until tomorrow. Piney citrus aroma with flavors of grapefruit and dried fruits (apricot?) - nicely bitter with a bite at the finish. Medium-bodied. Paired well with the wood-fired scallops and risotto.

On tap @ The Old Oyster Factory in Hilton Head, SC. A nice light amber with a thin but sustained head and nice lacing throughout. Mild grassy and light grapefruit hops with a good malt sweetness to balance. Taste is like the aroma with a slight grapefruit bitter linger in the end. Very nice to find some good local craft beer while dining on vacation.

I was in Charleston, SC for a quick visit and didn't have time to explore some of the brew pubs in the area. I did however stop by the Noisy Oyster for an excellent dinner and noticed they had Palmetto Pale Ale on the menu. So I ordered one.
The beer came out to the table in a pint glass and had an amber color to it. The head was average sized, white, and disappeared pretty soon. It left behind a light lacing on the glass when I drank it. The aroma coming out of the glass was a little on the light side. I had to do a bit to pull off a slight hoppiness and malt aroma.
The beer drinks well and has a decent light flavor to it. On a base of lightly sweetened malts, you will find a hint of floral hoppiness and citrus. None of the flavors are dominant and it's far from a complex beer. It's like a beginners American pale ale. Not bad, but not great. I will say this would make for a nice thirst quenching beer on a hot Carolina summer day. -

Bottle courtesy of Unclemattie: Poured a hazy amber color ale with a small head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt is somewhat weak. Taste is dominated by some light caramel malt with no discernable hops presence. Full body with some medium to low carbonation. I guess this one is OK but nothing truly extraordinary.

Sweet caramel aroma with a hint of pine. Good hop oil flavor is piney with grapefruit. Balances nicely. Overall, tasty. I want to revisit this one later.

Nice brew! My first from S.Carolina. Pours a hazey amber colour with a small to medium sized white head. Aroma is sweet, but hoppy as well. Taste is relatively light, for a pale ale- but nice hint of pine, grapefruit and dates.

I think perhaps each beer I have from Palmetto gets a little better. The pale ale is very nicely bittered with a grapefruit profile that is very satisfying. The taste is fairly well balanced with hops and malts and it finishes very clean. This is a decent beer that I will have to seek out if I ever find myself lost in South Carolina.

Thanks again bro. The aroma is malty with strong bitter notes with some grapefruit and maybe some very faint lemon. The appearance is a nice rusty amber with a nice head on top that remains and leaves some uneven lacing on the glass. The mouthfeel is nice and medium-bodied with nice bitter complexity with some malt for balance with a pallet that is wet and coats well and is very tasty. The flavor is of some dried-flowers with some nice bitter hops that become evident with some sweetness with an aftertaste that is bitter grapefruit and a finish that is refreshing, crisp, and slightly dry. Overall, this is a very tasty beer that is crisp and clean as well as refreshing with some nice hoppy bitter like a pale ale should have. This brew has high drinkability and would be a good session brew; I will remember this one next time I am in Charleston, SC.

An odd beer to find as a single at my local liquor store, since I've never seen Palmetto beers anywhere but that one time I was working in Charleston a year or two ago. Back then, I don't remember enjoying this too much -- seemed awfully "catty" and rather odd. But with a bottled sample of unknown age and background in a glass next to me, this really isn't all that bad.
Pours a bit weakly, I'm sure due to the rough handling of an unknown number of distributors between here and SC. And the smell really could use more "umph", IMO. But this beer's flavor profile, while a little odd at first, kinda grows on me after a while. Not your typical American Pale Ale, and not really a true English Pale Ale, but nevertheless, interesting.
A strange but enjoyable little beer a long way from home. Just goes to show you that it pays to dig around in the back of your local liquor store shelves... :)
