Just in time for cooler temperatures, Great Divide will bottle its fall seasonal beer, Fresh Hop Pale Ale. The September hop harvest is a once-a-year opportunity to brew with fresh hops, also called “wet hops.” Given the perishable nature of just-harvested hop cones, they are shipped overnight to Great Divide shortly after harvest. The morning of the scheduled hop delivery in Denver, Great Divide’s brewers begin brewing Fresh Hop and are ready to hop the beer just as the fresh hops are delivered. Using fresh hops is a big endeavor, requiring four to five times the volume of hops compared to the usual process of using pelletized hops. This complex process brings impressive results: Fresh Hop is an American-Style Pale Ale with moderate hop bitterness marked by a unique and intensely grassy hop flavor and aroma. Fresh Hop is a superbly refreshing, medium bodied, light-copper colored pale ale.

    Aroma: Caramel and fruity
    Taste: Caramel and grapefruit
    Nice and easy going.

Light copper color with tall off white head. The foam lasted to the last sip and left a nice lacing pattern along the side of the glass. Nice big grapefruit aroma covering up a small wedge of sweet malts. The flavor’s hoppiness seems more subdued than what the big aroma has suggested. It starts off bitter and sweet with sweet and tart grapefruit and a slight sweet maltiness. Before midway the grapefruit bitterness enters. Midway and beyond a grassiness does join the part and adds to the growing grapefruit bitterness. Nice hoppy ale.

Clear amber pour, not much head but surprisingly leaves quite a bit of lacing. Mild pine aroma. Fruity, floral, pine and grassy flavour. Helped along with a slight breaded malt background. Light bodied with medium carbonation. More like a fresh hopped ipa than an apa.

from my notes: Wish I knew the hop. Really nice, dark gold colour, nice aroma, really well hopped. Aroma tickles the nose like a pollenated flower. "There is nothing wrong with this beer." Well above average APA. Finish is rich, flavourful, crisp and lovely. ##2nd review: This one tastes like peanut butter. I swear it. Still, hoppy, smooth, regal even. BUt peanut butter on the finish...

Really lemony I thought, well really citrus, leaning to a lemon angle. slight lime too, some honey. Darker than the average IPA I thought. Sweet smelling in general. Bitter and sweet smelling hops. Medium to thin body, really quaffable.

This was a fantastic beer, something I've come to expect from all Great Divide products. Hazy orange pour with a nice head. Great lacing on the glass, aroma of fruity hops, some pine. Creamy grapefruit flavor and a bitter finish. Great Divide continues to impress!

A bright orange colored beer with a big frothy textured, white head rising above. Good hang time on this one. And the lacing of film all over the sides of the glass and thin ringlet are impressive enough. The nose is all about hops, pine and citrus. But surprisingly the tasting is not as strong. The malt balances everything out very well. Well carbonated and light medium in body. Comes as near to perfection as cn be had.

i was hoping for great, and got very good. no complaints, my expectations for GD have become so high it's hard to measure up. this has a nice zesty, spicy, grassy and citrus hop bitterness which is very nice in the flavor and nose. a little light bodied, but fitting for the style. not a ton of malt presence. slightly darker than usual for the style. nice beer. one of the better pales i've had.

Pours a clear reddish amber, bordering on coppery, with a fine-bubbled, barely off white head. Richly hoppy aroma has grapefruit and spicy hints. Flavor is quite hoppy but not at all bitter, with hints of evergreen and sour orange. Smooth yet lively and fizzy texture leaves behind a nice tingle.

Abundant citrus hop aromas with a good pine quality, the bread and caramel malts can be picked up as well. Dark copper color with a big fluffy head and thick lacing. Fresh and nicely bitter, it was a quenching hoppy ale. Good flavor the hops provide a nice soapy taste to compliment the citrus and evergreen. Biscuits, caramel and a touch of nutty malts make their way through the aggressive hop flavors.
