Introducing the newest addition to Uinta Brewing Company’s lineup, Dubhe (pronounced Doo-bee), an Imperial Black IPA. Dubhe was named after Utah’s Centennial Star, a star classified as a Red Giant. Dubhe, the star, appears orange in color, and is found at the top end of the big dipper’s spoon. The name “Dubhe” continues Uinta’s tradition of celebrating the great state of Utah, however, “Dubhe” is a fitting name for more than that reason: this beer is as black as the night sky and is brewed with an astronomical amount of hops. Dubhe is comprised of five hop varieties, a hop profile bold enough to shine through the roasted, dark malt character of this beer. A citrusy hop aroma, achieved by dry hopping with a proprietary blend of extreme Northwest hops, balanced with notes of mild dark chocolate and a hint of sweet licorice. Smooth from start to finish, Dubhe’s layered flavor profile emerges with rich and rounded toasted malt flavors, and is followed by a lively hop bitterness. At over 5 pounds of hops per barrel, Dubhe is the most hop-laden beer Uinta has ever produced. This shinning new addition is brewed with hemp seed (A play on the name, perhaps?), and has a far-out ABV of 9.2%.

Had this in a snifter at TJ's. Poured red-black with a smallish mocha head which dissipated to a coating. Lacing was ample and marked every sip. Nose was citrus, some sweetness of caramel and some roasted coffee. Taste was grapefruit, pine, some dark chocolate, roasted coffee and dark fruit. Mouthfeel was medium, dry and creamy with a strong bitterness in the finish. Carbonation seemed perfect for the style. Some booziness but pleasant. This is a very nice black ipa that I will go back to again.

12-ounce bottle at World of Beer, Key West. First Utah beer. Thick black pour, rocky beige head. Nice aromas of chocolate, coffee, and pine. Creamy mouthfeel. High ABV of 9.2% not obvious. Flavour much like the aroma, bitter finish. Not a style I care for but this was a worthy rendition.

Aroma is richly hoppy and grassy, with a smoky undertone and a hint of molasses - hard to beat that, at least in my mind that loves black IPAs (um, if you think about it, that’s an oxymoron) because I love dark beers and hoppy beers. It pours a luscious dark-chocolate brown that lets light in only at the edges and has a thick, fluffy, light tan head that likes to hang around. Flavor has a roast malt overtone with nutty, molasses, earthy and caramel notes plus hints of hops and licorice. Absolutely lip-smacking! Smooth, firm texture has plenty of fizz and life. I love black "pale" ales, and this is one of the best I’ve had.

Dark brown pour. Head shrinks but stays, leaves nice lacing. Black ipa makes my mouth water. Splendid beer that's a little more hops than roasted malts in smell and taste. Earthy flavour prominent, chocolate malt complimentary. Love it as I do most black ipa's

Bottle poured into glass gives a large coffee with cream colored head. the head is a bit rocky with good retention. Leaves heavy lacing. Beer is almost pure black, with hints of brown and red in the light.Smells of citrusy hops (mostly orange and grapefruit), some more earthy/floral hops, caramel, roasted malts, and chocolate.Taste starts with citrusy and floral hops along with roasty malts, the roasty malts quickly overpower the hops then comes a strong chocolate taste (more than smell) along with a bit of hemp seed in the finish. Has a crisp, but very roasted finish. Has a medium body with a bit of a buttery/creamy feel, low carbonation. Black IPA's arent my favorite, but this one is a very good beer.

A deep brown colored beer with a big sudsy textured, tan head rising above. There's decent hang time on the head. It settles eventually into a impressive ringlet-cap. Pine hops upfront in the nose. Some citrus added in the tasting. Some balance with roasted malt. Full bodied and slick on the tongue

Poors black beer with light brown lacing foam head. Aroma is hop, nothing else. Taste is again mainly bitter hops, but some notes of coffee, licorice. Aftertaste is long lasting and of course bitter. Interesting beer. (Salt Lake City 201308)

Bottle from Belmont Party Supply, OH. requisite black pour, thinnish, tight charcoal head, nice lacing. Nice hopped aroma and palate, piney and citrus, then some cocoa and sweetness, then back to the bittering. Nice and flavorful and drinks WAY lower than the 9.2% ABV. This is dangerous for the style.

Rich & clear ruddy brown with a thin but rocky cap: a pretty brew. Looks like a porter but, as it should, smells like an IPA: grapefruit & cotton candy, almost bubble gum. Serious grapefruit oil bitterness in the flavor, though. The underlying caramel sweetness juxtaposes rather than relieves this. Sticky & weighty but fuzzy feel, amazing lace.

Recent 4-pack from the store, and these boys didn't last too long. Exceptional example for this often difficult and mottled style. Billowing brown head that never fades, dark shiny body and a thick coating of lacing. Big upfront roastiness followed by a firm chocolate and caramel presence. Piney resinous hops are in wonderful balance to the hearty malt content. Juicy and bitter with a strong evergreen and citrus effect. Full bodied, bold hop bitterness, and satisfying all around.

Black color with beige head. Aroma is strong coffee, chocolate, and citrus. Flavor is rather bitter with some chocolate and coffee. Some citrus going on. Overall a good beer.
