Malt: Best Pale, Caragold, Caramalt, Carafa II, Carafa III Hops: Columbus, Chinook, Citra So it's a contradiction in terms, a Black India Pale Ale!?! The concept we came up with revolved around the old chewy sweet 'Black Jacks and Fruit Salads' . We wanted to take a big, fat IPA and lace it with undertones of slight roast and aniseed and blend with huge tropical aromas Pacific West Coast hops. We gained the hint of roast by using Carafa malts from Germany. They give us dark colour and a touch of roast but minimal bitterness, thus letting the hops fly and fly!

330 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.4%. Black colour, creamy tan head. Aroma of fruity and piney hops, hints of roast malts and chocolate. The flavour has plenty of piney hops with some fruit, medium dry, also roasty notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

Pours deep sable with a nice tan head. Aroma is quite hoppy with roast malt, smoky coffee, and subtle chocolate notes. Flavor has all the elements of a great IPA and a great stout, hoppy, smoky, coffee, chocolate, subtle nutty and earthy tones. Firm texture has some lively fizz. Whoa Black Betty, fam ba beer!

Pours a hazy copper colour with a big frothy beige head, great retention and soapy-foamy lacing. Citrus aromas of grapefruits, but with oranges as well balancing things. Hints of pine and caramel. Nice grassy hops over the roasted malts, with notes of cocoa, citrus and coffee. Not a hopbomb Black IPA, being from England, but a well-balanced hop and darker ale brew. Overall, the hops are well-blended.

Good stuff all round. Great appearance. Head lasts forever and laces most of the glass. More hoppy than roasted malt in the aroma and flavour. Mild roasted malt and chocolate. Pine, earthy, grapefruit and floral with a hint of lemon. Medium smooth mouthfeel. Very well made.

The beer pours a solid dark brown with a creamy frothy tan coloured head. The aroma is citrus and roasted malt. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is citrus, roasted malt, and a sweet milk chocolate hint in the background. Quite good. Easy to see why it's a top rated Black IPA on Ratebeer!
