If you are going to brew an opposing beer to Lagunitas DayTime IPA, what would you brew? Night Time Ale of course. The label description make a reference to the separation of the light and the dark (not Star Wars style) but more the difference in life during the day, and life at night. That’s why Night Time Ale is different too – A black IPA. A beer for midnight. Or 2 am. You’ll see this offering in April, 2014.

Pours a rich sable that lets a sliver of ruby-brown daylight through at the bottom and has a thick, persistent dirty tan head. Smoked malt aroma has a strong overtone of woody hops and a hint of molasses. Hops dominate the flavor, woody but scarcely bitter, with hints of green wood; smoky malt, molasses and licorice make their appearances as well.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big pillowy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is acidic roast chocolate malt with fruity piney hops and a little smoke.
The flavor is sweet roasted acidic chocolate malts with some fruity piney hops and a bit of an ashy bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, I’m liking this years version better than last year. Less sweet with more going on. -

Style of beer and brewery I like. Not disappointed. Very IPA'ish aroma. The full flavour could be Hop Soopid and Cappuccino Stout mix. Very smooth. Good to have a solid brew like this before bed. Or before the next one.

A hint of ruby in a black colored beer with a big creamy textured, beige head. There’s great hang time on that head. A thick film that stays on the glass long after the beer has gone and an impressive ringlet make up the lacing. There’s a strong grapefruit hint of citric hoppiness in the nose. That same hoppy profile blends so well with a roasted malt in the tasting. A bubbly sensation on the tongue.

Some strange fruit in the nose, trouble placing it.... a musty dank nose with lots of burnt grain notes, maybe some vanilla. Dark brown body with moderate beige head, bit of retention and not much lace. Mouth is medium bodied, carbonation is minimal but fine. Flavor is complex, some cotton candy, some prune, some deep espresso, pretty nice. Alcohol very well masked.

Solid black IPA that leans a bit on the hop side. I would not expect less from Lagunitas. I actually prefer them a bit more maltier, but since this is a stronger strength, the extra hops gives it more character and helps balance it out. Grapefruit citrus up front....with the chocolate, caramel malts, & maybe some coffee/toffee in there on the back end. Most of these categories for ratings could bounce between 8-9, but I went the conservative route here. Will most likely grab another in the near future to see if anything changes for an update.

22oz bottle -
Aroma - huge citrusy/grapefruit aroma. Aroma was dominated by the citrus angle hops and it was excellent.
Appearance - black body, 3-finger dark tan head, above average retention, no noticeable lacing
Mouthfeel - medium bodied, light carbonation, smooth
Flavor - light roasted malts, grapefruit bitterness, light sweet coffee flavor, very clean
Overall - phenomenal for $3.50/bottle. It delivers the hop craving in the aroma, a clean hop foward flavor, supporting malts and while the ABV is high, it drinks like a 5% IPA. Excellent. -

A solid VERY aromatic black IPA. The nose is fantastic (9.5)...as hoppy as hop stoopid with just enough dark malts to balance and make more complex. your nose will continually wander back to the glass or bottle. Feel is a little lighter than expected, as is the flavor (given the aroma) but this is solid across the board and one of their best. A very nice addition to the black ipa family :)
