Wookey Jack is our first foray into the dark outer world of black IPAs. Rich dark malts and spicy rye careen into bold citrus laden hops creating a new dimension in IPA flavor. This brew has been left unfiltered and unfined to retain all of its texture and character. At 60 IBUs, Wookey Jack is gnarly on the outside yet complex and refined on the inside.

2013 rating. What a great beer to celebrate rating #1000 of California brewed beer. 22oz bomber pours with a mahogany head supporting a dark tan head of foam. The aroma offers a mix of malt sweetened dank earthy onion to garlic like hops mixing with citrus and a bit of dark roasted malts. The taste is similar and rich and I can really sink my teeth into it. I get firm citrus hops and dank garlic hops that mingle seamlessly with a dash of pine hop bitterness and a light degree of dark roasted malts. This comes together beautifully and the more I try it the more I want. I’ve had this over and over again and just could NOT get myself to take down notes and capture the experience. So this time I am despite the poor note taking execution here. I love this stuff.

Pours a deep sable just a flea’s eyebrow above black with a thick light tan head that leaves generous lacing. Woody, hoppy aroma has a tempting rye undertone. Pay aroma has strong woody and rye notes plus hints of roast malt and caramel. Firm, smooth texture leaves a hoppy, rye, and caramel finish. Woo key or wookiee, unleash your inner beast!

Another HUGE thanks to Slowrunner77 for this beer. A fantastic brew - hops on top of hops (mainly citrus), upfront presence of pepper and spice, standard dark malt bill. SO GOOD. It all worked so well. Aroma is citrus, medium to medium heavy in weight - some lacing, dark brown to brownish black in color. Nice head retention. Excellent beer.

An aggressive pour yields a dark brown/black color with 1 finger foamy tan head which leaves some long lasted lacing. Very hop forward. Initial piney and earthy hops followed by roasted malt with hints of chocolate aromas. Piney, earthy hops flavors are quickly joined by deeply roasted malt upon tasting. Great balance between the flavors. This could be a nightmare of strong flavors clashing, but here they work in perfect harmony. Well done. Smooth and full. A unique brew. Firestone Walker does it again.

Tasted this on a women beer enthusiasts' night out a few months ago-- just now catching up on recording some older reviews. Ruddy coffee color on this one with a persistent thin cap. Bittersweet grapefruit aroma & flavor is beautiful. Terrific rye with tiny bubbles, smooth, a great counter to the spicy and salty pizza I also enjoyed that evening.

Pours dark brown with small, lasting head; impressive lacing remains. Aroma is earthy with pronounced rye, a hint of roasted coffee bean and floral topnotes. Hearty, earthy malts give weigh to clean, crisp bitterness. Just the right level of bitter present to play off the rich and bready grains. Medium-to-full bodied, refreshing but surprisingly smooth. I find myself buying this beer every opportunity that arises.

Enjoyed at Yard House at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas. Pours a dark brown colour with a creamy beige head and decent sticky lacing. Beautiful grassy aromas of hops giving grapefruit and other citrus notes. Light chocolate in the background. Nice dark grain taste with again, lots of hop citrus character. Good dryness in the mouth with well-balanced wetness. Medium to heavy body with the alcohol well-hidden. A black IPA more on the hoppy side than roasted malts, making it hard to taste and smell the rye.

I love to try new beers but when you come across a one like this it’s hard to move on. Appearance is dark with a great head, retention and cling. Dark chocolate, a little spiciness from the rye and a resinous hop bitterness. Roasted malts and hops, what more could one want. Smooth mouthfeel and a touch of warmth from the alcohol. Great stuff. Need more.

Bomber from Haggen (Burlington, WA). Not the greatest fan of black IPA's, bu figured if anyone can make it work, it could be FW. Pour of darkest bron under a creamy tan head; nicely laced. For the nose, lots of malt and some hop. Flavour had a lot of malt but with enough hops, citrus and pine to balance things out. Smoooth mouthfeel, and sweetness at the finish. Very well done.

Poured a deep black color ale with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of spicy rye malt notes with some dry hoppy notes with light resinous notes. Taste is also dominated by spicy rye notes with some resinous dry hoppy notes with light dry bitter notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Really nice mix between some spicy rye malt with solid hops punch.
