Also known as: Best of Beer Camp #16 This dark russet-colored beer has an intricate aroma of roasted malt and fruity esters, with a touch of resinous pine note from the use of juniper berries. The flavor is deep and complex with an upfront sweetness and flavors of dark baking chocolate, which give way to a dry finish from a mixture of hops, and a mild touch of juniper. Juniper Black Ale is very drinkable and perfect for a cold winter night.

If there was more of a pine and citrus note here, this would be a great Black IPA, but the aroma and flavour brought about by the juniper makes for a great beer as well. The juniper spiciness contrasts well with the malty sweetness.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark black/brown with a big rocky light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is roasted malts with some char, some dark fruits, black licorice and some juniper and floral notes.
The flavor is roasted malts, black licorice and a little dark fruit with a big bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth, slightly watery, carbonation.
Overall, an interesting beer. A little too charred and unbalanced for me. -

Had as Best of Beer Camp #16. Pours an opaque warm chocolaty brown with a very thick, fine-bubbled tan head that sticks around for a while and leaves some respectable lacing. Aroma is smoky, spicy and malty, with hints of juniper and licorice. Flavor has a fairly strong but not unpleasant juniper note, as well as nutty, spicy, malty, smoky and woody tones. Edgy texture has a fair amount of body and leaves a subtle fizz and a woody, slightly smoky finish.

Thanks, Jayson - a really nice black ale. Pours black as the bame would imply with an ever so slight head. Juniper in the aroma along with roasted malt and chocolate. The malt and chocolate continue into the flavors, but the juniper recedes. Velvet to the pallete. What a nice way to end an evening.

From the Beer camp 12-pack. I can smell more of the juniper when it is in my mouth than when I hold my nose up to the glass. The hops are sharp and biting. A dumptruck full of roasted malts and chocolate in the nose and on the tongue. And my burps smell like gin. Pours a thick black with a narrow layer of brown fizz on top. A great beer, and a great pairing with the rosemary bbq'd steak for dinner.

Beer Camp #16 from jlozier. Thinnish black coffee pour with a near-perfect big bubbled tan head and big lacing. Toasted malts, spicy and earthy hops, a hint of juniper in the aroma. Taste is of roasted malts, hint of coffee, spicy hops - zesty on the tongue - and still some juniper. Pretty nice Black Ale. Thanks JLoz.

Saw this in the supermarket a couple weeks ago and had to pick it up after hearing about it recently. I had to drink it the morning before I left Oregon for the last time! Dark black with a very tan large bubbled head. Malty and lightly fruity with a hop spiced aroma that is very rich. Somewhat creamy but quickly becoming rough with hops in a medium body. Roasted malt and hop flavor, finishing very bitter. Pretty good.

Nicely roasted malt with some chocolate vs. Pacific Northwest hops........YES, it's perfectly done. Deep brown body, big tan head and splotchy lacing. Balanced beyond belief (per style) malty followed by a great bitterness, truly wonderful. Likely one of if not the best Black IPA's I've sampled to date. A lingering hop bite coupled with juicy fruits, hearty roasted malts, chocolate, toast, citrus and pine. Surprise Surprise this one runs away from the rest of the Beer Camp pack.

Sampled on 5/21/2011. This Black IPA pours an eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized tan/beige foamy head. The aroma is roasty, hoppy and sweet. A medium bodied black IPA. The malts are roasty, caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy and floral. Nice balance. Roasty and hoppy. Nice carbonation. Very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
