Our imperial, Baltic-style porter is inspired by the strong, dark brews exported from Great Britain to Eastern Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rich and flavorful with upfront notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee.

From a six-pack picked up in Florida of all places. Seemingly unavailable here in Milwaukee. Drank five while in the Sunshine State, and brought one home for a later tasting. Pours a dark mahogany with little head. Fragrance not too perceptible, but an excellent, lingering mouthfeel. Sweet flavor with notes of vanilla, molasses and chocolate nibs. Very tasty, and conceals its upper range ABV rather well. I'd go for this one again, quite avidly. Back to Florida I guess!

A bold blackness in color with a two finder foamy textured light tan head that rises briefly. Settles into a thin ringlet. I get a lot of cherries in the nose and tasting. Served up cold the cherry is medicinal. Let it warm some and the cherry flavir complements the molasses and roasted malt. Moderate bodied and smooth

Pour was dark with three finger head. It didn’t smell great, fruity and musty. The flavor was creamy chocolate but an unpleasant fruity sweetness that had almost a sour-like quality in the finish. Mouthfeel, like I said was pretty nice and creamy and the flavor richened and rounded out as it warmed. Yet, there was still a quality in the flavor that was somewhat harsh and unpleasant.

Well...it is what it is. One of those beers that is good, tasty, drinkable, but forgetable. I like the flavor, a little rusty of a mouthfeel, but the chocolate malt aftertaste is decent. Appearance is semi-thin....dark brown, but not quite coffee black. I haven't sampled a lot of Baltic Porters yet, but this seems to have that European-porter feel to it. Worth the try and the price was right, but think I'll be bored of this by the time I finish the 6-pack......................................UPDATED 3/15/13: Sampled a single after two years. Better than I remembered from the review. Upgraded a point on appearance and mouthfeel. Not "bored" at all from this beer. It is good stuff.

Not good. Not good at all. This is like a generic imperial porter. In fact, Southampton should be punished for calling this an Imperial porter. It is the Shasta of imperial porters. If the Dollar General store had an Imperial Porter, this would be it. Just skip it unless you simply have no money and want to try a truly subpar beer.

Comes out of the bottle a deep, chocolaty, opaque sable with an average light tan head. Aroma is smoky and oily with coffee and toffee hints and just a touch of sweetness. Flavor is mainly roast coffee and toffee with a hint of molasses. Texture is pleasingly smooth and a little tingly, leaving a smoky and slightly sweet finish.

A black apperance to this beer. Some coffee, chocolate, and caramel in the aroma. The flavor is mainly chocolate and coffee with a hint of licorice. The palate was a little disappointing. A rather thin bodied porter. Overall it was pretty good though.

NorCal tasting Apr 07 - Yowza!! What do we have here!! What an awesome beer!!! Now this is what I wish more brewers would do with their Baltic Porters. Make it so it's refined, clean and smooth yet still pack a serious punch. Aroma is dark fruit, caramel, toffee, baker's chocolate with some underlying smoke. Appearance is perfect. Flavors were intense, yet smooth enough to not be overpowering. Any more and it would have been a ragged stout and any less unrefined. Dark fruit, baker's chocolate, roasted malts, and toffee with just enough of a subtle hop kick to remind you it's there. Nice job and highly recommended.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black porter with a small foamy dark head with average retention. Aroma of chocolate is well mix with some roasted malt. Taste is a mixture between sweet malt with slight roasted bitter touch and some smooth chocolate undertones. Creamy texture is really interesting but body is lacking. This is a really good beer that would have been great had there been a more fuller body.
