The Terrapin Hop Karma Brown IPA is a head on collision between a hoppy west coast India Pale Ale and a malty, complex brown ale. Brewed with 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts, this hybrid style represents the best of both worlds. PEACE, LOVE and HOPPINESS

I liked this one. A malty IPA...or brown-IPA hybrid. Balance and mouthfeel is good. Appearance is a medium brown with off-white head. Would be better if in 6-packs instead of 4, as comparable to something like Lagunitas or Cigar City, which is same quality or better and cheaper. Still something that I would try again.....solid beer.

a beepa if u will .. . pours a dark tan .. . medium foam, not a lot of lacing .. . light roasty hops, slick and thin .. . interesting take on a dark ipa but just not executed that well .. . . Presenting the most eligible landowner in all Hertfordshire, Mr. Brainly..

I picked this bottle up from the Wine Gourmet in Roanoke, Va. It was just so-so. I am finding that I am not Chuge fan of the "Black IPA." They are confusing to my palate. These beers are completely unbalanced - overloaded malt/caramel/hop flavor doesn't work. Terrapin's attempt is no different.

Bottled@SBWF2008. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is sweet hops, wood and some mild nectary notes. Flavour is very much the same. Rather sweet fruity and nectary aftertaste.

This beer was fantastic, I can't believe someone gave it under a 3! Pours a dark muddy buddy brown. Nice frothy head. Generous in fruitHops are present but not too overpowering. Taste is full, natural and well hopped. Slight smoke/barbecue presense. Battle of sweet and bitter which is pleasent. Love the psychedelic label as well.

Seving - on tap @ New Wave in Philadelphia. Pours a dark clear reddish-brown with a 1/2" white head, little lacing. Strong carbonation is immediately evident. The nose is caramel, chocolate and some roasted grain. Mouthfeel is thin and oily. Taste: Hops up front with brown sugar, caramel, roasted coffee. Considerable bitterness in the finish. Terrapin says this beer is "head on collision between a hoppy, west coast IPA and a complex, malty brown ale." For me, yeah, a car wreck is not off the mark. The tastes don't seem to balance or compliment at all. Not an awful beer but not one I care to try again

Purchsed on my trip to Nashville. Pours a clean dark brown colour with a decent creamy beige head, good retention and great lacing. Mild hoppy nose with hints of strawberries. After breathing, some roasted malt aromas appear. Refreshing mouthfeel that is mildly crisp and dry. Roasted malt and beautiful hop (not too excessive) with a nice long aftertaste that is pleasant (with hints of toffee). This is quite an interesting beer, mixing and IPA and a brown ale together. I would have to say that it is a success.

A reddish tinged brown colored ale. Deep in those colors. A small light beige frothy textured head rises above and settles fairly quickly. Some lacing. Some citric hops but more caramel malt in the nose. Medium carbonation in a medium body. Pine and citric hops are more dominate in the tasting, but not as much as you'd expect from an IPA. A decent drink just not a great IPA.

Nice hidden gem in my bro-in-law's fridge: Pours a deep clear brown with ample head and lacing. Aromas of sweet malts cut deeply by prominent earthy and pine hops and a touch of brown sugar. Taste is a good balance of sweet/bitter with the nod going to the bitter. Sweet malts upfront then a nice clean pine and slight floral hops bitter that shortly lingers. Interesting and tasty beer.

Out of the tap it is a rich opaque brown with a thin but persistent head, very attractive. Aroma is very hoppy, smelling a lot like a pine tree, which means extreme hoppiness. Flavor is, as the aroma promises, extremely hoppy and pleasantly bitter, with a smoky overtone and hints of chocolate. Finish is pleasing and hoppy, with a touch of sweetness to offset the bitterness. Excellent!
