Rogue Smoke(previously known as Welkommen on draft) is a German style Rauchbier (Smoke Beer), which was inspired by the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Most rauch brews are bottom fermented, however Rogue Smoke, is top fermented. It is orange-amber in hue with a delicate smoke aroma and flavor with an intense hop finish. In All About Beer, August, 1995 issue, Christopher Brooks writes "Alder wood, indigenous to the Northwest, is the smoking agent, though a small amount of Bamberg malt is used in the mash, too. Beech is drier than alder, reports brewmaster John Maier, so we use a little of that for added complexity. Welkommen, a smoky, nutty ale, is also very dry, which given the 15 pounds of hops (perle and Saaz) added to each 15-barrel batch, is no surprise." The seven medals in nine years which Rogue Smoke won at theGreat American Beer Festival in Denver are also a tribute to this unusual brew. Rogue Smoke is brewed with Great Western Harrington, Klages, Munich, Hugh Baird Crystal, Carastan (30-37 and 13-17), Chuck's Alderwood Smoked Munich and Bamberg Beechwood Smoked malts; plus Perle and Saaz hops. Rogue Smoke is available in the classic 22-ounce seriograph bottle (replacing the older 7 ounce bottle) and on draft. Measurements: 14.5 degrees Plato, IBU 48, Apparent Attenuation 76, Lovibond 20.6.

Hazy amber with a rich white foam. Aroma of smoked wood, juniper, ham, crackers and flowers. Smokey flavour of tar and ham with touches of caramel and crackers. Clean medium body. Smoked wood in the finish.

Poured into a pint glass from a 22 oz. bomber. The pour is a somewhat hazy amber with a tall white head. Retention is decent, as is lacing. I didn't really know what to expect in the nose, having never tried a smoked beer, but I was surprised. It smelled to me just like smoked bacon or ham with maple flavouring. The taste is more of the same. There is just the slightest hint of chocolate in the background. A nice bitterness is present throughout. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a lot of carbonation. Drinkability suffers a bit since it makes me feel as if I'm eating meat, not drinking a beer that tastes like meat. I'm glad it's been a while since I ate, or I wouldn't be able to finish the bomber. If this is a good starter smoked beer, I'd like to try a more advanced version. It might be fun to revisit this every now and then, though.

i ind of liked the smoke flavor, but don't think i particulartly liked the beer behind it. just too harsh, and a little too bitter, with a nut flavor that didn't go well with the smoke. i'll pass.

Nice amber color with smallish head and no lacing. Strong aroma of sweet smoke. Nice flavor of smoked bacon with a little sweet brown sugar. Nice level of smoke and sweetness without being overdone. Odd to say being a Rogue beer, but just a touch more hoppiness would have been nice.

Pours out a light brown color, clear with a small to medium sized head. Aroma was Skoal chewing tobacco, some light wintergreen mint and sweet malt. Flavor was smoky, but nothing too overboard. I liken this to Alaskan Smoked Porter, but perhaps a bit stronger in the smoke dept. Nice beer.

A reddish brown brew with an off white head. Decent retention and good lacing that does give way to minimal near the end. Aroma, you guessed it smoke. Reminders of putting the hickory smoke chips on the bbq. Reminded me of being back in Germany when the butchers had their smokers going. Underneath the Bbq aroma is a nice aroma of hops, not strong but they are present. Taste is a malt front then the smoke takes over to a mildly hop finish. I dint know what to expect but I enjoyed this brew. I do think after a few of these brews the smoke would get to me but one or two with a good meal or just to enjoy…

It will come out sounding strange, but drinking this beer is very much like drinking a smoked salami. Aroma is strong but not over the top like a Rauchenfels - very nice. Ordinary amber in color with a surprisingly full head. Some maltiness can be picked out through the smoke, but you really have to look for it. Slightly sweet in the finish which didn't seem to fit too well.
