  • Samuel Adams Summer Ale
    rated 3.1 15 years ago

    Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Poured into a weizen glass from a 12 oz. bottle. The freshness date is September 2009. The pour is a hazy golden with a tall white head. Retention is decent, but lacing is minimal. The nose is mostly lemon with some wheat and spice. The taste starts mostly with the lemon and spices but transitions into a mostly wheaty, bready one, but the other flavours never completely go away. A mild bitterness makes itself known. Mouthfeel is heavier than expected, closer to medium-bodied than anything, with a high amount of carbonation. Drinkability is high; it keeps me wanting more. This is a decent beer made for the summer. With temperatures close to ninety, it's a good fit for today. Though the lemon is part of the equation, it's not as overpowering as I expected it to be. Overall, a little bland, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again if there were few choices.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12 oz. bottle. The pour is a hazy yellow with a finger's white head. Retention and lacing are decent. The nose is wheat (of course), some orange and some other fruits (maybe berries). The taste is more of the same. The fruits even seem to overpower the wheat. As expected, it is thin and refreshing. Drinkability is good; I could have another (or two). This isn't a bad beer by any definition of the word, but I'll pass on buying it again. I've seen this described as tasting like a liquid version of fruity cereal, and I think that fits rather nicely. I wouldn't turn it down if offerred, but my money's going elsewhere.

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Poured into a pint glass from a 12 oz. bottle. I found a six pack today at Corner Market in Hattiesburg. The appearance is golden yellow with a tall white head. Retention is decent, but lacing is below average. The nose reminds me of a pale ale, but there is somewhat of an off-flavour. It's not that bad, but it definitely was not expected. The taste is closer to expected, with some toffee, apples and a nice bitterness. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, something I've also noticed with Southern Pecan and Indian Summer. Drinkability is very high, perhaps too high; I find my glass almost empty within ten minutes. It may be blasphemy in Starkville, but I must say that I like this beer. It is like a lighter version of a pale ale, and it may replace Southern Pecan as my favourite LM bottled beer. Now where is Miss. State's beer?

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Poured into a pint glass from a 12 oz. bottle. The freshness date is October 2009. The pour is a dark copper with two fingers' head. Retention and lacing are decent. The nose is subtle but full of dark fruits and earthy tones. The taste is more of the same, with some toffee throughout. It begins sweetly and progresses to bitter by the end, with a dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium-to-heavy with a certain amount of stickiness and a lot of carbonation. Drinkability is okay, but I am not too sad that there are only two bottles in the pack. It's a decent beer, but it's not something I would go out of my way to find. If offerred one, I certainly wouldn't refuse.

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Poured into a pint glass from a 375 ml (12.7 oz.) corked bottle. The pour is almost black with a small brown head. The head quickly recedes, but there is good lacing. The nose is sweet with strong notes of coffee, some dark fruits and alcohol. The taste again has the coffee after the sweetness, like you've added a bit of sugar without stirring. That is followed by the dark fruits mixing with the coffee. Alcohol is present but not dominant. Surprisingly, there is very little bitterness. Mouthfeel is very thick with a low amount of carbonation. However, it is smooth and silky. Drinkability suffers a bit with the sweetness. One bottle is enough for me. This would be a nice warmer in the winter, but it isn't bad on a warm spring night. The 13.1% ABV definitely hit me before I even finished this review. However, the price seems kind of steep for the end result. I will probably not buy it again, but I won't refuse a glass if offered.
