The south is famous for smoking everything. Why not beer? Sue is a big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, with mellow smokiness coming from barley malts smoked with cherry wood, and assertive bitterness from Galena and Perle hops to cleanse the finish. The beer named SUE is best described as an big Smoked Porter. We tossed in loads of pale, chocolate, caramel, and black malts, along with a brand new malt on the market - cherry-wood smoked malt! I had some of this malt this year at the Craft Brewers Conference in Boston, and knew right away what beer I wanted to try it in. The sweet smoky caramelly aroma and body of this beer reminds me of a great wood-fired pizza, balanced out with some earthy acidity from plenty of Galena and Perle hops. It’s got a great clean finish, and you have no idea that it weighs in at just over 9% abv (until you have had a few!). Yazoo Sue, our cherry-wood-smoked imperial porter, is now on tap at: Three Crow Bar Beyond the Edge Broadway Brewhouse - Midtown 12th South Taproom Beer Sellar

Big thanks to jcwattsrugger for giving me this 12oz beauty. Thanks John. It pours deep darkness with weak tan head. The aroma is full with dark roasted malts and firm smokiness mixing with molasses, black licorice, a hint of chocolate and a sense of Alderwood smoked salmon. Interesting and enjoyable aroma. The taste begins with dark roasted malts, smooth smokiness and sweet molasses. It then turns only a touch ashy mixed with Alderwood smoked salmon before the finish unleashes chocolate and caramel into the fray. The after taste has rigid layers of smokiness coupled with a modest amount of a chocolaty velvet mouth feel. Yummy smoke forward brew.

Thanks a lot beerbluesandbbq, the Vols were the better team! Perfectly black body with a medium orange tinted tan head. Subtle sweet smoke with some pancake notes. There is also some stone fruit, like prunes. The taste is sweet raisins and smoke with bits of tobacco. I got a bit of almonds in the finish. An overall smooth and well balanced beer that is on the sweeter end for a porter. The warming booze is only an afterthought with how easy this one is to drink. A solid beer.

An almost perfectly done smoked beer. Not overbearing as most are, this is extremely well balanced and still very beer like, the smoke adds a mysterious layer to the nose and flavor. Very nice looking deep brown with red tones, looks very smoky and bar-b-qy. A nice rich porter hides in the background as well, holds the smoke just right. I like the smoked porters better than the other smoke styles and this is one of the best. Thanks Lou, when can you send more?

Rich, smoky aroma has coffee, molasses, nutty and yeasty notes. It pours an opaque sable with a thick and fluffy light tan head. Flavor has a firm roast coffee tone as well as nutty, caramel and semi-sweet chocolate notes and a hint of licorice. Full-bodied texture is smooth as almond milk and only slightly fizzy. Finish is smoky with chocolate and nutty tones, and the tingle is slight and not persistent. However, that is the beer’s weakest aspect, and does not make it any less enjoyable. If you are a stout/porter fan, look for it.

12 oz brown bottle from Blue Lou. Bottled 1st week of Jan 2011 and consumed four months later. Pours a deep, dark chocolate brown with a thin beige head which leaves decent lacing. The aroma is smoke, smoked meat, chocolate, dark roasted malts, and sweet pit fruit. This beer really excels in taste and body. The taste delivers on the aroma's promise, with plenty of smoky-meaty goodness. The body is as lush and smooth as chocolate syrup. The finish is earthy, smoky, and slightly acidic. This is a smoky malt bomb with enough hops to cleanse the palate.

12oz bottle - Herring Creek beer tasting
First, a HUGE thank you to my southern brother, bluesandbarbq, for sending me this wonderful brew. Yazoo was all over this one when they made it, and the proof is in the beer. The beer pour out a mahogany brown/blackish body with a beige 1/2" cap. Aroma is smoke, tar, a litte leather, rosted malts and charred fruit. Flavor steers more towards the roasted malts, than smokey malts, and it's almost stout-like with the flavor. Woody, roasty, smokey, lightly figgy, light bitterness with bit of a twangy/alcoholic finish. Definitely blurs the lines in my mind between a smoked ale/porter/stout. Love when beers do that. -

Big thanks to Bluesandbarbq for this one,a smoked imp. porter? I'm on board! I was kinda surprised at how much the cherry came through, alot of dark fruit came through, not as much malt as i would have thought, a nice long smoky finish. The mouthfeel is robust, and satisfying. Overall a very nice brew from Blue Lou, thanks again buddy!

This beer did not thrill me in the least. It's a good beer, but not a great beer. Had on tap in Nashville and all around me people were raving about it.....but my friend and I thought it average. A dark brown pour with huge aromas of smoked wood, roasted malt, and dark fruit. Flavour was too m uch smoke and not enough malt and hops for me.

Lou, you da man! Wow... what a great smoked ale. smoke, chocolate and toffee immediately fill the nose and the flavors match in style and intensity - simply wonderful. Deep black pour, thin head. Velvety smooth. Certainly worth seeking out.
