Tasting Notes: Hoppy, caramel aroma, dark burgundy in color with an off white head. Intense flavors of citrus hops, and complex notes of nuts, berries and mocha. It finishes long and lingers for at least 15 seconds. A lively seasonal ale, assertively hopped, dark in color, and festive in taste. Debuting in November 2009, in honor of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Brewed with 2-Row, Munich, C-120, C-150, Kilncoffee, and Carofa’s Special 2 malts. Hop bill comprises Newport, Horizon, Simcoe, Continental, Crystal 90, Amarillo, and Rogue Farm Willamette. Free range coastal waters and top-fermenting Pacman yeast complete the recipe. No chemicals, preservatives, or additives. 16.5P, 68IBU, 77.7AA, 36L.

On tap @ Bent Elbow - a dark, almost black ale with a 2 finger cap. Very hoppy and roasty nose to this. Moderate carbonation. Rich chew of roasty malts in front is instantly balanced with PacNW hopping, some cocoa, long roasty bittering finish. Quite a decent Cascadian dark. I think Flying monkeys netherworld is a tastier Cascadian but this ale is more satisfying. Sturdier and more robust. Nice drinkng.

Pours a deep, opaque, stout-like sable with a nice tan head that leaves behind some average lacing. Aroma is seriously hoppy, having a firm evergreen tone like fresh-cut pine wood. Bold flavor has considerable hoppiness and some bitterness with woody and earthy notes and just a hint of caramel. Firm-bodied texture is fairly fizzy and leaves a tingly, slightly smoky finish. Go mad!

A nice mahogant colored beer with a really impressive frothy light beige head. There's good hang time on this one. Great lacing. Heavy film aside the glass and thick ringlet. The profile in the nose is piney-citric. To that in the flavoring add a sweet simple roastiness. Light bodied is the downside.

I wouldn't really call this a black IPA. More of a medium to dark brown color. The style seems to be one of those hybrid IPAs, but more like one of those Belgian-IPA crosses vs. Black IPA. I enjoyed it, reminded me of some of Lagunitas hybrids. Again, good beer...just a little pricey...as it is Rogue.

decent representation of the style. looks more like a brown ale, but a little fuller in body. pretty good balance of roasted malt and citrus hops in nose and flavor. not a standout, but enjoyable.

My first "Black IPA" - deep ruby mahogany pour with a thick tight creamy head leaving copious amounts of lacing. Aromas of citrus and earthy hops, toasted malts, very slight blackberries. Taste is much as the aroma with the citrus hops bitter forward and lingering with some roasted malts and very slight berries. Pretty good stuff.

Nice lacing and a dark red color. Piney hop aroma. Malth sweet wiu a healthy amount of hops. Light medium body. Lingering hop finish. Not bad but still nothing to go out of your way for.

Cloudy brown or possible dark yellow, tiny skiff floating on top. Hoppy chocolate with citrus and roasted malts are all in the aroma, the aroma is both thick but mild if that makes any sense. First impression was a thick feeling brew with a flavorless biter taste. Roasted malts and chocolate are starting to appear what are good, but the intense bitterness is not meshing to well with the roasted malts. To me this type of flavor should be smooth and sweet not rough and bitter. Stupid beer. Citrusy hops bordering on peachy are being tasted towards the end. Don’t think I’m a fan of this new “Black IPA” style. Was ok to drink but will never have again.
