The first release in the "Ales from the Dark Side" series...A dark, roasted twist on the traditional IPA that uses an absurd amount of malt and is "octo-hopped" with the German Perle hop. The biggest beer in the RJ Rockers linup to date.

If you get this in a bottle, be careful - it tends to foam. At least it doesn't gush like champagne, but you should be ready with a towel. Pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a very thick and quite persistent fluffy tan head. Aroma fills the nose with smoky, molasses, hoppy, earthy and licorice notes - it all but says "Drink me!" to one who loves black IPAs. Smoky, earthy, nutty, hoppy and licorice notes make themselves known as they dance across the palate. Firm texture imparts plenty of sass and fizz. Come to the dark side - we have great beer!

Courtesy of Lou - thanks. Packs a whallop! Pours dark brown with hints of mahagony with a fluffy tan head - more than I expected. laces very nicely. Very nice, balanced hoppiness - not too over the top, yet pronounced. Lightly malty with chocolate and caramel tones. Alcohol masked well. The bottle f-in' rocks and has earned a spot on the wall of fame.

High on the rich, dark malts while still containing a mildly assertive hop presence. I'd throw this one closer to the porter/stout spectrum as the roasted and burnt malts were prominent. Silky smooth and medium bodied with a dark, wonderful body and large tan head. I enjoyed how the hops took the back seat and let the malts do their thing. Thanks Louis, everybody at the tasting really enjoyed this bottle.

Brownish black pour with a large pillowy light beige head with heavy draped lacing. Looks very much like a porter. Malty aroma at first with some cocoa, very earthy hops, a touch of toffee. Taste is also malt-forward with a very lightly sweetened caramel touch then the earthy hops kick in and linger lightly but for a good period of time. The ABV is well hidden. Very cool bottle that is heavily wax-dipped. Nice effort from R J Rockers - probably my favorite brew from them so far.

Pours black, thin tan head. Gobs of lacing. Mouthfeel is hoppy. Aroma a bit flat. Good flavor profile, nothing overblown but perhaps too reserved too.

Dec. 2009 - Black IPA’s are fun. This one was not really aggressive on the hoppage was more like a slightly hoppy porter. I think these things fare better with an american hop profile....but that’s just me.
