R.J. Rockers Brewing Company became Spartanburg's first brewery in 1997, when owner and brewer Mark Johnsen set out on a mission to provide the people of the Upstate with the best microbrewed beer they had ever tasted. Mark, a New Jersey native, had loved brewing beer for his friends and family for years. Following his service in the 1991 Gulf War, Mark was stationed in Germany as a member of the United States armed forces, and he took this opportunity to learn as much as possible about brewing from the experts. By the time he was honorably discharged from the service, he was ready to take his beer to the public. Mark established R.J. Rockers Brewing Company as a brewpub in Spartanburg's historic downtown Morgan Square in 1997. Over the course of the next five years, R.J. Rockers became a favorite downtown meeting place. Patrons could sample as many as ten different craft-brewed beers on any given day, with favorites ranging from a light golden Kolsch to a dark, sweet Stout, while watching the new batches brewed before their eyes in the glass-enclosed brewhouse. Rockers patrons enjoyed the best beer around, excellent food, and entertainment ranging from live rock and roll bands to fiercely competitive trivia contests hosted by the owner and brewer himself. After five successful years of building a reputation for having some of the best and freshest craft-brewed beers in South Carolina, R.J. Rockers made the transition into the microbrewing industry. The brewpub on Morgan Square is gone. Rockers beer is no longer available on only one set of taps and only in downtown Spartanburg. Instead, Rockers beer can be found fresh and on tap, in restaurants all over the Carolinas, brewed with the same flair and to the same exacting standards as before. We now have two varities of Ale, Bald Eagle Brown and Patriot Pale available in select stores throughout the Carolinas. Our brewhouse features a 10-barrel Pub Brewing system with three fermenters, five conditioning tanks, and supporting equipment, which gives us an annual capacity of 1,200 barrels -- or as many as 200 kegs per month. We currently feature four beers brewed year-round, and four seasonal beers brewed on a rotating basis, all of which are described here.
