We'd say that Longboat is a classic chocolate porter, but lets face it, who's ever heard of a chocolate porter? It is, however, a rich dark ale, with a distinctive chocolate finish

Bottle from trade: Pours dark black with a 2 finger brown cap which laces and displays fair retention. Full bodied, cocoa-malty character. Big malts in front like chocolate cake without the sweetness, some dark fruits, coffee, tobacco...long wet finish dries slowly with bitter chocolate end. Well made, good tasting, satisfying but nothing stands out from the hundreds of other micro cocoa porters out there.

Quite liked this brew. More bitter, and thinner than i thought, but not in a watery way, or in a way that it is lacking something, but that it is lighter and easier to drink. Alcohol is well masked, some tart fruit faintly on the nose. Chocolate is subtle, the chocolate portion definatly tastes a touch artificial, but this does not detract from it being a lovely quick drinking brew.

650ml brown bottle, brought back from BC. Label as pictured above. Pours a dark brown color, almost like a coke. Huge billowing head of tan fan that shrank away fairly quickly. Thin streams of bubbles, no lacing to speak of. It has the smell of some bitter chocolate. Slightly fruity and earthy. The taste was good, malty, earthy, the chocolate flavor was not very strong. The body was thinner and lighter then expected. I found myself wanting more - flavor, kick, creaminess - anticipating a really powerful 'double'.

Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a medium head with good retention. Aroma of chocolate is subtler the name of the beer would suggest. Taste is drier then expected (I was expecting more sweet chocolate then anything else). Body is about average but lack the creamy texture that would have made this a great beer. Definitely not one of my favourite, I was expecting more from this brewery I guess.

09.30.05 Sample from bomber, thanks Josh. Mega chocolate is like a beery hot fudge sundae. Sweet and chocolatey on nose, all across palate, and lingering after the finish. Despite the sweetness, the grain offers a light, underlying bitter bite not unlike a semi-sweet candy bar.

Looks slightly better than it smells or tastes, this poured into a dark, creamy glass full with a thick head. Aroma immediately revealed the chocolate, but not so the taste.
