I wasn't too sure what to expect with this, actually. I've had Unibroue's Raftman ale, which is brewed with the remnants of Whiskey, but otherwise I'm not at all familar with many experimental brews that combine one or more aspects of both beer and liquor in the same bottle. In addition, I do know that I'm not a bourbon fan, not one bit. But I bought this for the hell of it..., and I'm glad I did. This is very tasty, and quite unique.

While it's been too long since I've had the MacTarnahan's / Portland Brewing Blackwatch Porter, I'm sure I would have remembered if it had a complex vanilla-like texture like this has. Almost silky smooth -- quite polished and drinkable. The nice head and Belgian lacing was a nice touch, too.

Complex, and yet highly drinkable. This really surprised me, to be honest. While not exactly what I would have in mind for a hot Summer day, but goes nice and easy on a nice Summer night. Recommended.

Dark black color. Large foamy white head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee and a touch of dark fruit. A medium to light bodied porter. Hops are slightly bitter. A very smooth tasting porter. Touches of oak and dried fruit are complemented by a bourbon-like sweetness. Perhaps a bit thin tasting for a porter, but I have been noticing this trait in a lot of porters lately, so it may just be me. A very drinkable winter warmer porter. Etched/painted beer bottle. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

This beer is very dark, almost pitch black except for some glimpses of mahogany as I held it to the light, lucsious creamy tan had that sticks around..nice looking beer indeed. The aroma is of dark roasted malts ,followed by a woody whiskey aroma..then cream and liquorice. Great taste to this beer also..sweet smooth malts, then dark fruits ( blackberry) then the taste of bourbon shows up like a ghost, then its gone and a bitter coffee taste is present..hints of vanilla..tart aftertaste..fantastic stuff. Very nice and smooth on the tongue..could be a touch thicker. Im my opinion a great porter from McTarnahans

Pours a black (very very dark violet) color with a large brown/violet head. Aroma is of dark, roasted malts and chocolate...very nice! Mouthfeel is thick and creamy smooth. Flavor is a little drier than I had hoped; not quite as sweet and full as the aroma would let on. It's not bad by any means, just not what was expected. Very dry, smokey taste...brings to mind baker's chocolate and liquid smoke. Finishes earthy and woody; and dry. Has the aroma of sweet chocolate, but the flavor of smoke. Not a bad beer, just different.

A fantastic whiskey and coffee aroma. A solid black apperance with an off white head. The flavor is very interesting with a mixture of burbon, soy sauce, coffee, and chocolate. The body is a little thin on this one but that was the only real complaint I have about it. Nice one!

This porter pours with a black body topped by a medium thick, fizzy, brown head with little lacing. The aroma is sweet yet sour and bitter with strong bourbon notes, alchol notes, a touch of malt and a bit of licorice. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter with slight bourbon notes, nice roasty coffee notes and a touch of licorice. Full bodied, tingly on the tongue and slightly dry.

Poured a deep rad and black color with a small tan head, but hardly any lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, alittle chocolate, mild whiskey. Roasted malt and coffee taste with a creamy mouthfeel.

There is a smoked wood and milk aroma on this one, which is really nice. Creamy with a sour milk and alcohol mixture. The bourbon really stands out in the finish. Goes from a smooth cream mouthfeel to a biting alcohol presence at the end, which is pretty remarkable. I like this one a lot.
