This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name "Porter") in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens' Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate. "Full-bodied and malty with undertones of coffee and chocolate and a bright, hoppy finish, in style it's like Cary Grant's accent: the best of British and American." - The Boston Globe, November, 2005 GOLD MEDAL WINNER - Porter , 2001 Great American Beer Festival. Thanks to PaleAleRider for this one. Pours a dark brown colour with a creamy-foamy beige head with good retention and creamy lace. Roasted malt aromas with some nice sweetness to balance things, like cacao, vanilla also liquorice and a little grassy leaf. The taste starts off with coffee, steering into the burnt malt and finishing with the mild hops. Bitterness and dryness lingers. Quite a nice robust porter.

Pours a huge frothy brownish head and has a dark brown appearance. Lots of sticky lacing remains. Good retention. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, chocolate and resin. Flavours are somewhat sweet at first but some bitterness and spice notes show up not too long after. Still with the coffee and chocolatey flavours but also some hints of dark roasted malt, toasty malts, resin and vanilla. Slight drying sensation on the palate.

12-ounce bottle at World of Beer, Key West. First New Hampshire beer. Ebony pour under a medium brown head, with some resultant high-quality lacing. Aromas of roaster malt and chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitter finish. Really good beer.

The beer pours a translucent dark brown (when held to bright light) with a creamy tan coloured cap. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. The aroma is medium bodied with above average carbonation. The flavour is dark malt, coffee, and weak chocolate. -

All round good beer. As the name suggests it has a robust flavour. Roasted malt, very strong black coffee, chocolate and dark fruit. Full bodied with a nice appearance and aroma. Pleased I have a few more.

Pours a dark brown/ black body with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Medium thick lace rings are left behind. Smell is of dark and burnt roasted malts, cocoa, and touch of soy sauce . Taste is much the same with cocoa, bitter coffee, and citrus hints on the finish. There is a nice balance between the roasted coffee and chocolate malts and hop bitterness. Crisp mouthfeel yet smooth going down. Overall, a nice robust and tasty porter indeeed.

This sucker is black hole that light won't penetrate. The head foams up THICK like a root beer. The aroma is almost pure malt but has a very tiny hop zing. The taste and mouthfeel is thick and smooth. I will buy more of this for sure.

Pours a pitch black with a 2 finger head that takes it time. Aroma is very malty but a tad soapy. Chocolate is also noticeable in the aroma. Taste is quite roasted with a slight hop backing. Taste is also a tad on the soapy side. Slight chocolate to the taste as well but nothing to right home about. Slightly dry with a tad bit of booze. Finishes off dry. Mediocre at best but drinkable.

Came out of a Smuttynose sampler pack. Deep black pour with ruby hue, smell of coffee, caramel, and nuts. Flavor was roasted coffee bean, sweet caramel, and just hit of nuts. A tad bit of bitterness at the end to round it out. A really nice porter.

Wow as soon as I poured this one a great roasted malt and coffee aroma caught my attention. Beautiful deep brown pour with a medium mahogany head. Plenty of lace on the glass. Mouthfeel betrayed the aroma and appearance though. It was a little on the thin side and the flavor was not as enjoyable as I had hoped. Very good beer though!
