World Tour Beer: This time the Otter is going to Germany, with "Otterbahn," a weizenbock, set for May release. "Otterbahn" is a unique combination of a hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer), and a bock (robust malty ale). The wheat adds a citrus like flavor and light body, the unique yeast strain produces clove like character and banana esters. The addition of toasted malts adds even more complexity to this already full-flavored style. As they say in Germany- prosit!

Dark brown in color, thick head fades fast and leave a very thin lace. Wheat hits the nose, hints of bananas and cloves visit the journey. I pick up a small hint of something sweet but can’t put my finger on it…caramel perhaps? Taste is almost a shadow of the aroma but with a slight dry, crisp finish. I enjoyed this beer. It has a nice all around balance of flavors and paired up nicely with some wurst that I grilled. It also went well with the second bottle solo. Not too much experience with this style but I enjoyed this one…try it if you find it.

The appearance was dark carmel brown with a good inch of head that went down to about a quarter of an inch slowly. The aroma was great, like a good bock should smell like brewed in the fashion of southern germany. The flavor was great for a weizenbock but was sweet enough to almost be like a Berliner Weisse. I absolutly do not know where others are getting apples, cocoa, nuts, raisens, cherries, toffee, caramel and fruits out of this. Yes it is complex and well worth investing in.

They almost got it. Beer poured looking slightly browner than a cola with a cola-like head (moderate but immediately dissipating). Aroma was bubblegum. The flavor had too much bubblegum. It was distracting and overwhelming. Underneath was a nice banana wheaty weizenbock flavor with a nice ashy smokiness to it that balanced nicely. If only the bubblegum flavor could be surgically removed, because it was bad.

Pours a dark, dark brown, almost black. The average sized head is khaki and creamy. The aroma is a bit too alcoholic with a cloves and the funky, slightly vegetal aroma that hefeweizen yeasts sometimes get. A bit of cocoa and perhaps a touch of charcoal mix in with the flavors. Pinenuts. Not bad, but the head from the alcohol is unbalanced.

Not a stellar example of a weizenbock. Poured a murky/cloudy brown with some orange/amber tones. Head was weak, as was the lacing. The aroma was light smoke, plastic, wheat, and bananas. Some chocolate in the flavor but this thing was harsh and really undeveloped, astringent, somewhat of a bitter rye/wheat sharp character, ash and bubblegum also there. Mouthfeel was right down the middle, maybe a tad acidic.

Poured a hazy, dark reddish brown color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet, dried fruits, with some banana, caramel apples, yeast, cocoa, some light spices, and nuts. Taste of more cocoa, with raisins, yeast, sweet cherries, toffee, and light alcohol.
