So much in brewing is looked at through the eyes of history. With centuries of beer making behind us, it is impossible to ignore traditions. If we did, we’d be doing a disservice to the heritage of our trade. In Germany, brewers have made “bock” beers for hundreds of years. These are dark, malty, lightly hopped beers first brewed in the 14th century in the town of Einbeck. Funny thing about this town’s name – when the style was adopted by brewers in Munich, their Municher accents pronounced “Einbeck” as “ein Bock” which is German for “Billy Goat.” True story. To this day, many visual puns using goats have adorned labels of Bock beers. We’ve enlisted the creative talents of Nate Duval to illustrate “Goat Boy.” The conversation went something like, “Nate, we need a Goat Boy.” He replied, “Goat boy? I can do that.” Our in-house designer (and another guy named Nate) filled in the rest of the graphics. And thus, the continued tradition of goat iconography on bottle labels. FOOD PAIRINGS: Aged cheeses like Provolone or Manchego, roasted meats, apple tarts and fruit desserts, shortbread cookies. When words don’t say enough we sometimes let our fingers do the talking. Maybe it’s kid stuff, but the sign of the goat has been used by rock stars, sports fans, celebrities & unfortunate politicians to celebrate symbolically. Open this bottle for your turn to flash the eternal gesture of high voltage rock & roll. For those about to bock, we salute you!

Pours a good size frothy beige cap and has a fairly dark amber/coppery appearance. Good lacing. Aromas are wheaty and malty with notes of yeast. Flavours are mostly malty, some toffee, earthy hops, spices. Full bodied mouthfeel.

This beer has lot's of flavour and doesn't look too bad either. Some floaties but clear for the style. Aroma consists of breaded malt and dark fruits. Medium/full, creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has dark fruit, some spice and banana. Slight tart and grassy finish.

The beer pours a translucent mahogany colour with a thin creamy light tan coloured head. The aroma is caramel malt, spices, dark fruit, and wheat. The mouthfeel is creamy and medium-full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is sweet up front with notes of caramel and banana, and has a bitter kick to the finish. Best Southern Tier brew I've had -

Pours a golden-amber colour with lots of tiny, tiny particles floating through. The head is frothy, off-white, has good retention and thick patchy lacing. Aromas of caramel malts with notes of apples, alcohol and mild grass. Fruity malt flavours with again, the caramel base and some metallic hints from the hops. A little creamy in the mouthfeel, slightly thick with a nice dry finish. Even some mint at some point. Interesting brew that goes down nicely, but not sure it is a style I really like. The wheat is quite subtle but shows up a little with time.

Pours out a deep dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is of sweet malt and candy. The mouthfeel is solid and thick. The taste is a explosion of malt, fruit and wood. This is a mighty fine Christmas beer.

A mahogany colored beer with a big sudsy textured very light beige head rising above. There's good hang time on the head. It settles into light dusting of film and a thick ringlet. Bananas in the nose and in the tasting matched with clove spiciness. Light bodied and easy to drink.

On tap @ Suttree's High Gravity Tavern in Knoxville. Deep ruby brown pour with ample tight tannish head and lacing. Bananas, hint of clove in the nose and palate, sweet malt/wheat presence, earthy subtle hops, more banana and light clove goodness. True to the style and very flavorful.

Comes out of the growler a slightly hazy mahogany with a thick tan head. Aroma has a malty core with an overtone of apple and snippets of pear and banana, as well as a hint of cloves. Bold flavor starts with a malty core and adds earthy, apple, pear, banana, clove and woody notes. Texture does not quite measure up, smooth but not too firm or fizzy. However, if the weakest aspect of a beer is the mouthfeel, big fat hairy deal. This is still a world class beer. Goat for it!
