Inspired by local artist & roaster Michael Allen's eccentricly-named blend of coffee beans, Midnight Sun's brewers designed a beer recipe and flavor infusion process that perfectly captures the alluring aroma, satisfying flavor and curious legend of Allen's Arctic Rhino Coffee Blend. Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter combines two quintessential Pacific Northwest favorites: coffee and ale. The result is wonderfully romantic and robust--a duel-fueled porter that melds charismatic dark malt with freshly roasted coffee beans. The (un)rest is up to you.

Shared bottle at KnoxBeerCrew tasting. Near jet black pour, slight head, some lacing. Black coffee and roasted coffee bean aroma. Black coffee and roasted coffee bean flavor. Coffee. It is coffee through and through, but flavorful indeed.

I like. Out of the bottle pours mostly black. Nose is instant coffee nose. Take a sip, and some brownie notes are picked up right away. Bit o vanilla, bit o oak. Certainly light roasted coffee is present. But it's not too heavy.

22oz bottle -
This beer was full of coffee goodness, and while one dimesional, it's quite tasty. Aroma was coffee, coffee, and a little more coffee with just a bit of tootsie roll thrown in. Flavor had a nice meld of coffee and chocolate, light molasses, light vanilla and a body on the thin side. Another nice beer from Midnight Sun. -

no justice, no peace ..don't trust the police .. . dark, beautiful roast level .. . nice foam .. . odd off putting aftertaste .. . stoked to try .. . would be perfect if it wasn't for that strange back taste .. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning Mr. McCracken's already there.

This seems an appropriate beer after roasting some coffee. A solid pour produces a three-finger thick, nicely browned, creamed chocolate colored head. The beer is quite black in appearance and when held up to the light only passes a hint of light (really, I mean this as it almost seems a trick of the light). This beer smells strongly of bitter black coffee, even as I was pouring the beer it was clear that this was a coffee infused beer. It is hard to get anything but coffee from the nose, perhaps a hint of sweet, dark malt and a bit of cocoa are noticeable towards the end if you really dig for it. The coffee notes can be a little harsh, though there is a bit of coffee complexity here.
A bit on the fizzy side, some vigorous swirling of my glass helps to mitigate this problem. This beer seems somewhat light bodied, I was expecting some richness to balance the coffee, but that might be a bit too much to expect from a 5% abv beer. In truth though the coffee notes in the flavor are not quite so dominant as in the nose, but they are still the dominant note in the flavor. The beer has some roast-derived bitterness to it and it finishes with a burnt acidity as well. This can really reminds me of drinking cold black coffee at times. There is a touch of malt sweetness here though that manage to accentuate a chocolate like flavor. The taste reminds me of thin, deeply roasted, cold black coffee and I can't say that this is really all that exciting.
Not a bad beer, but it is a bit too coffee dominated (bitter, a touch acrid and acidic). A more rounded malt character, or less coffee would go a long way towards making this a balanced beer. That said if you are a die hard coffee person, then you might enjoy this a bit more than I did.

This porter pours a deep black color from a 22oz bottle. Large to medium sized tan foamy head. Aroma is coffee beans, chocolate and roasted malts. A medium bodied Porter. Malts are coffee, chocolate and roasty. Lots of coffee flavors which linger in the back of your throat. Hops are earthy and floral. There is also a touch of smoke. The coffee flavors along with the roasty malts dominate the flavors in this beer. Nice carbonation. Good balance. Excellent if you like coffee porters and stouts. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter

Poured a deep mahogany color with a large, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee beans, chocolate malts, and vanilla beans as well. Taste of chocolate, coffee grinds, and light vanilla, with heavy carbonation in the mouthfeel.

Black with mahogany around the edges. Thin tan head fades quickly. Big coffee in the aroma. Coffee is heavy in the flavor. Cola and a touch of molasses back up the coffee. It could use more malt to balance the coffee.
