Mendocino Red Tail Ale

Color is clear amber-yellow, decent head. Aroma is decidedly malty with strong citrus hints and a whisper of hops. Flavor has nice balance of maltiness and hoppiness, fairly but not unpleasantly bitter, just a touch of orange. A refreshing and jazzy ale.

I'd long avoided this one, trusting my assumption that it wasn't that good. Turns out I was correct. A bit of a folk legend, though I'm not sure why. Better than a macro, but not a beer I'd spend my own money on.

I had this beer with lunch at the Fisherman's Wharf in San Fransisco on 14 July 2011. This beer was average by all accounts. In fact, it was a tad too malty. I wasn't impressed and wouldn't have it in the future.

Decent little amber/orange color. An off white head with decent size and retention. Some ok lacing left behind. The head was mostly soapy looking. The brew was cloudy with some burnt yellow highlights at the bottom. The aroma had some mild, sweet caramel malts coming through. An earthy, "peat" type smell. Slome fruitiness reminiscent of peach. The smell reminded me of an "ESB." Low, mild hop aroma. The taste brought out the sugary, sweet caramel. More hop bite and more hop characteristics in the taste than in the smell. Somewhat fruity in the taste with a hint of graininess. Meidum to light mouthfeel. Somewhat watery. Left some on the palate, but not a whole lot. It was smooth and mostly crisp. Semi-refreshing. This beer was alright. Not the best and far from the worst. I wouldn't turn it down if it was offered, but after a couple, I would probably move on to something else. I wouldn't go out of my way to pick it up.

It pours a solid amber with thin white head and some lace. An aroma of caramel malts, light hops, limes and citrus, and some spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malt, hops, citrus, some pine, bitter, and spice. Very good!

A local brew for me, it is made about 10 miles from home in Ukiah California. The beer color is tan copper, fairly lone lasting head, less bitter than IPA, with a somewhat malty and sweet overtones. A good warm weather brew for the people of Mendocino county

One of the first craft beers that I fell in love with. Just revisited it and it is still solid.

Some hops and malt on the nose. Pours amber with some head. Balanced carbonation with a smooth finish. Flavor is sweet and light. Some hops present. Nice beer for a hot day.

A nice solid red ale from Mendocino, upfront the aroma was floral hops with a caramel presence lurking in the background. Nice amber body, good carbonation, with a thin cap. Flavor was very similar to the aroma with the floral hops at first then the caramel malts show up, followed with a slightly bitter finish. Overall it wasnt too aggresive, but it is a nice respectible beer.

in a word, boring. one of the least impressive "amber" ales i've ever had. i can never quite understand why a breweries flagship beer would be this when there are way better beers in their arsenal, including the ever popular pale ale...

A hazy amber colored ale. The head is weak settles far too quickly leaving behind a thin, soapy lacing. A lot of malt is in the aroma and in the taste. If there is any hops, they are buried in the overwhelming sweetness of malt and dried fruit. The mouthfeel is more thin and watery than one would expect from an ale.
