Comes out of the tap a hazy, barely translucent dark honey golden. Light tan head was minimal, but this may be from the way it was poured - it does leave some substantial lacing. Rich, fruity, malty aroma has hints of honey and fresh wood. Flavor is fruity, primarily apple and pear, as well as malty, with a subtle hoppy, woody, bitter undertone. Texture is smooth yet quite fizzy, and it leaves a fruity, woody finish.

Had a couple of these on tap in Oregon. I had heard of the beer years ago but didn't think much of it. I was impressed and didn't complain when the waiter brought me a 2nd one without asking if that's what I wanted. Has a very nice, thick head with good lacing. Cloudy brown color. Medium full body was surprising for am amber with plenty of malt and a nice clean finish. I don't see the ABV listed anywhere, but it must be pretty healthy considering what I feel after drinking 46 ounces of this. I'd recommend this to anyone finding themselves in the Pacific Northwest.

i gotta say...i'm a bit surprised by all the 4+ ratings for this one. I had it last night with the in-laws and none of use were too impressed. cloudy amber beer, nutty biscuity malt, little sweetness, and hops that provided bitterness and little else. I can't say it wasn't flavorful, but the flavor and the aroma were a miss for all 3 of us. nothing special IMHO.

Sampled on draft at the Tap Room, Seattle. Pours bronze. Biscuit malt dominant aroma with floral hop notes. Balanced and nutty. A hint of cocoa. Awesome amber.

Pours medium brown with a short, creamy head and nice lacing. Aroma is malty and extra rich for an Amber style ale. The flavor boasts some bready malt with a faint coffee-roastiness that adds depth. Light-to-medium bodied and smooth. Great showing for the style. This is among the best ambers I have sampled.

I'm sure that oif they bottled this stuff, it would sell. It pours a nice amber colour with a decent head. The aroma is caramel and grainy malts, with a hint of hops. The flavour was a little unbalanced on the malt side, but quite enjoyable.

I wish I could still drink this masterpiece here in Arizona. I miss this beer so much cause I have never tasted anything like it again. Seattle is the only place you can get this great beer so if you are in town search for a pub with this beer and you won't regret it.

We didn't know about Mac and Jacks until we moved to the Northwest a few years ago. It is by far our favorite and it can decide which restaurant we head out to. They must have Mac and Jacks on tap. Oh, you can also have a mini-keg filled at their litter brewery, for the budget-minded beer drinker.

Mac and Jacks African Amber is an amazing beer. It has a thick, almost milky appearance when poured from the tap. The beer maintains an extra hoppiness because Mac and Jack's attaches a hopp sack to the bung (the cork that plugs up a keg) so the beer is continually leeching the flavor of the hopps. This is also the reason the brewers do not bottle their beer. You can learn all this on the awesome brewery tour offered every Sunday. When you are shiny and giggly at the end of the tour you can go buy a growler for $14 and bring it back next weekend for an even cheaper refill! Yum!!!

Medium amber color. Small head. Aroma is nutty and fruity, with hints of apricot and melon. A medium bodied amber. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are grapefruity and citrusy. Caramel. Melons and earthy. A very nice amber. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
