Our fall seasonal, BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™, was inspired by a native California tree, its incredible leaves, its delicious syrup, and the colors of fall. Bigleaf maple thrives along the banks of California’s mountain streams. Native Californians once made rope and baskets from its bark. Today, artisans handcraft its wood and burl into custom guitars. In autumn its huge leaves, up to a foot across, can display a full range of color as they slowly turn from green to gold to red. Bigleaf maple sugaring in California dates to the 1800s; yet this tree’s unusually flavorful syrup remains the product of a small group of hobbyists. A hint of maple—including bigleaf maple—syrup in every brew perfectly complements the malty complexity, balanced hoppiness, and rich fall hue of BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™, a red ale like no other. BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™ is a quaffable, well-balanced red ale with character. Its malty complexity and coppery color come from a combination of two caramel malts, pale malt, and a hint of maple syrup. To complement these flavors, we used three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops in the brewkettle and a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Cascade for dry hopping. The result is a distinctive fall seasonal with extraordinary depth and intriguing aroma.

Pours clear coppery amber with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled pale buff head that leaves good lacing. Aroma presents malty, hay and caramel notes. Flavor delights with toasty malt, hoppy, and subtle caramel and hay notes. Mouthfeel features decent body and fizz. Don’t leaf this off your list of autumn beers!

Pours a dark amber with a red tint, medium sized slightly tan head with lots of lacing. The aroma was of dry crackery malt, slightly roasted, slight hint of syrupy sweetness. The taste starts off with a dry crackery malt, and quite grainy as well, with piney and citric, little sweetness and ends with a bitter, earthy finish. The mouthfeel is medium in body.

Bought a 6-pack of this a few months ago and forgot to review. Basically a red ale comparable to something like Lagunitas, but lighter than most of their reds or red-hybrids. Maple is light, so not really that sweet. Medium hops to it. Reminds me of a harvest ale, properly released for the fall season. Nice texture too like all of Anchor's brews. I'd return to this next year.

I picked this beer up from the Wine Gourmet in Roanoke, VA. This beer was GREAT. It was not overly sugary or dominated by maple. It was perfect. Still tasted like beer but you could find the maple hiding in the weeds. A great autumn ale - may be my new go to. Anchor does it right!

On tap at The Market in Maryville, TN. Reddish brown pour, near perfect cream head leaving beautiful lacing throughout. Hint of maple in the nose and initial palate, not overwhelming at all, earthy hops to offset sweetness, caramel, hint of bread, then more earthy hops. Nice linger. Better as it warms.

A red ale like no other is right. Very unique. Shifts between caramel malts, citrusy hops, bread to bitter. All with a light note of maple. Very subtle in the aroma, more in the aftertaste than anywhere else. Really cool brew, both session able and insanely complex. Started good, and got better as it warmed.

A bright orange-amber in color. A big sudsy light tan head rises robustly above. There’s some hang time on the head. It settles into a healthy splootchy film and ringlet. Malty caramel and grassiness with hints of bubblegum. Tart grapefruit rind hops jump out in the tasting. Not getting much maple. Light to medium body, smooth, creamy.
