The style name may be an oxymoron, but this beer is based on Loose Cannon IPA, only darker (much). Black, hint of ruby, with greyish-brown head and good lace and foam. Aroma is floral and fruity with hints of something solvent-like. Medium body and viscosity. Aftertaste is drying. Interesting, but I like either IPAs or Stouts better than an IPA and Stout mix. Not sure I'm a fan of the blend.

A little bitter and rusty up front...but the chocolate malts settles in on the back end. Well balanced and a decent feel. Not one of the best black IPA around, but one of the better ones....above average for sure.

IPA hop citrus and pine right from the start, very fresh. Hops are soon followed by toast, sweet roasted malts and more floral hops. Spotty lacing all around the glass above a half-inch tan head and brown body. Medium bodied, bitter and malty. Great balance within this one. Not a huge fan of this style, but this is a prime example of how it should be done.

Pours a deep, rich, opaque sable with a fairly substantial tan head that leaves a decent amount of lacing. Strong aroma is quite hoppy and evergreen with an undertone of sour citrus, mainly grapefruit with a touch of tangerine. Hoppy, smoky flavor has grapefruit, tangerine and roast coffee notes - like a good IPA, yet clearly the "black" variety. I love this style! Smooth, firm texture has a good fizz and leaves a smoky, hoppy tingle.

I like the whimisical packaging of the Heavy Series line. Thisone pours a midnight blackness in color. The medium head is frothy in texture and light beige in color. Settles in short order. A thin ringlet is left behind. The hoppy resins are light, floral. The roastiness malt more dominate as it is in the tasting. A little thin of a medium body. Overall a nice drink.

Beginning to like this style: pours black like a porter, thinnish, with an adequate light beige head, huge amounts of lacing. Nice hops aroma, with some black pepper, a touch of licorice, chocolate malts. Taste is both smooth chocolate malt and peppery spicy hops. Good balance and mellower than light IPAs. Nice representation of this recently popular style.

Black IPA, you say? Damn... pretty awesome. Pours black as advertised, thin head, little lacing. Hoppy as the Loose Cannon, but the whole "black" thing is pretty wild... nicely balanced flavor and aroma - and as one would expect with a good, honest IPA. Tasty, indeed!

I really enjoyed this. Its tastes very similar to Loose Cannon which is an normal IPA. Not as hoppy as I like but still worth a taste. Lemon and orange undernotes. Put all of this together with it's black stout look and an affordable price, you have a solid beer. It's out for a limited time
