Black, cracked, stuffed in a sack, boiled and cold-infused. The real treat of our A.P.A. is the tangle of flavors that fresh cracked pepper and Northern Brewer Hops create. At 65 IBUs (bitterness units) there's plenty of zing for the Hop Heads or Bitter Bettys, but not so much to overpower the tingle of the black pepper as it slowly kicks in. Likewise, the 15° Plato malt bill features a healthy dose of caramel malt meant to soften (but not stifle) the play of pepper and hops on the palate.

So, after trying the Epic Portamarillo porter, I needed something to change gears again. Keeping with the exotic theme... An ale with "fresh cracked pepper" - that outta do the trick! Yowsa! Got this puppy from Wisconsin Beer Mafia stalwart phishpond while visiting Mad-Town. Looks harmless enough - pour a slightly cloudy copper amber, with a tall white-ish head, good lacing. Then... ta da! Black cracked pepper aroma straight up. Wow. Nicely different, pepper followed by a slight citrus hops presence and a hint of malts to barely offset, but mostly pepper. Taste follows the nose - the black pepper upfront, the hops and light bitter linger, and a bit of malts. Black pepper dominants this one no question, but it wasn't overwhelming. Actually went down very well just after having the Tamarillo beer. Pairing a beer to follow another beer - like a meal or a salad this time though. Tasty weird little critter but I dug it. Thanks Travis! I felt like I was making one of my rib rubs in liquid form...

When sampled fresh this beer is all about black pepper, all you can smell or taste is black pepper. Give it some age and it mellows and the beer flavors come to the forefront. Try mixing it with a smoked beer, really interesting.

12 oz bottle (acquired in a trade) into a standard pint glass. Poured a cloudy, bubbly dark orange-amber with a two-finger head that settles to a coating. Lacing is abundant and lasting. The brewer states on the bottle that it is a “beer brewed with black pepper” and is it ever. Pepper is strong in the nose but accompanied with citrus (orange) and some pale malt. Taste is strong with the pepper as well but that comes after the initial orange and pine and some caramel malt tastes. Finish is sweeter but the pepper is there. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy but with that pepper bite. I liked this but doubt my mouth or lips could handle more than one, unless it was with a steak. Otherwise it is a unique offering and one you should give a try.

Pours a dark copper/amber with a foamy white head. I hardly noticed the pepper in the aroma--citrusy hops are at the forefront. Taste is mildly bitter with just the faintest hint of pepper in the finish. Not bad.

Black pepper? I think the only time I ever had a beer with black pepper was something from Fantome. Not sure if it was purposely put in there or not, but I recall really enjoying that beer. This was interesting, no doubt. Just didn't have a huge black pepper impact that I was hoping for.
The beer pours out a rather dark copper color, cloudy with a small off-whte head. Aroma is slightly vegetal, light lemony hops with just a subtle black pepper nose. Flavor has some iced tea-character, VERY light black pepper, and a vegetal/old malt flavor. Just couldn't really get into this. -

This unfiltered APA is a cloudy deep copper color with a slight tan head. To tell the truth, I'm not sure I could have picked out the black pepper aroma or flavor unless I was looking for it. I had a few of these when they were first released, and believe the pepper was more pronounced back then. The nose was piney with the taste more citrus and spice (though not really the sharp pepper as expected), with a sharp bitterness and somewhat lacking in malt complement. The mouthfeel is a just tad thin and the blend is lacking in complexity. Nevertheless, a very drinkable brew but I think it has lost some of its original Knot Stock personality -- too bad...

This was different. It poured a dark copper color with a weak sandy colored head. It had a dry aroma with a black pepper and pine needle taste. It had a peppery aftertaste.

i noticed immediately the taste of black pepper which lingered on for a while. it wasn't spicey but prevalent. it had a nice deep amber colour with a big frothy head. aromas are hoppy and citrus fruit.

An interesting beer here. Poured a cloudy dark amber, with a nice head that faded slowly and left some bits of lacing. Mild and refreshing, NOT an altbier (which was the style listed for it on my inventory page), for sure, but a good pale ale with hints of lemony hops and sure enough, a note of peppercorn in the finish. I'd drink it again.
