Named after a precious for of quartz indigenous to only Morgan Hill, California, this classic dark ale is smooth and refreshing. Its dark color results from the use of caramel, higher kilned dark crystal and chocolate malt. The beer's flavor is malty and fruity with a subtle roastiness. To finish Poppy Jasper is generously hopped with Galena, Cascade and Liberty hops for a perfectly balanced wonderfully complex character. Winner of the 1995 California Beer Festival Gold Medal; 1996 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal.

Sweet with some complexity of flavor that gets lost in the overwhelming caramel. I didn’t hate this beer, but I struggled with its lack of balance. There is plenty of malt in the flavor and aroma with some lightly roasted notes that I wish were a bit stronger. The abv isn’t high enough for the beer to be syrupy or horribly sweet but it tended in that direction for me. The mouthfeel is fine with appropriate carbonation.

Pours a clear orange colour with a thin white head. Aroma is really nice with plenty of berry fruit on the nose. Sweet apple taste, something similar to a cider taste. A brown ale? I totally would not have guessed it.

I received this on Friday in a trade with a friend in La Jolla (6 California beer for some French Wines). This beer poured a translucent reddish colour into the glass with a this head that was gone in a blink of an eye. The aroma was malty with some tones of maple. It is a medium bodied beer with ideal carbonation. The taste is somewhat lacking with a heavy dry malty taste that does not appeal to me.

Dark amber bordering on chestnut brown. Decent head retention. Very nutty/malty aroma. Wow! Full bodied with a lush mouthfeel. Very full malty flavor with enough bitterness to cut the sweetness perfectly. Very enjoyable brew.

Medium amber color, medium head. Roasted malts, medium hops. Medium hopped amber ale. Some malt sweetness. Good balance. Matly yet with a good hop bite. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pours hazy amber with a thick off white head and low carbonation. Lacing is excellent! Aroma is balanced nicely between piney hops and sweet, amber malts. Mouthfeel is acceptably full and very smooth. Flavor is very smooth and sweet, leaning toward the malty side, but with a nicely bitter finish. VERY well-balanced in my opinion. Good all-around amber and worth tracking down in my opinion.

I was quite impressed with this one. A dark amber color with a moderate head. A dark fruit filled aroma. I taste caramel, some oak, and cherries in there. Lots of dark malts and nuttiness. The mouthfeel is creamy and somewhat bitter. Poppy Whoopie! I really liked it!

Nice malty nose, dark amber color, moderately cardonated and a decent hop presence at the end. Close to a Marzen?, Octoberfest toasty maple sugar like tones, a good beer overall as with most of this brewers line.
