We originally brewed this Black IPA to benefit birds affected by BP’s Gulf oil spill and donated all of the proceeds to the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research. The charity program has ended but the beer became so popular that even with a name like Toxic Sludge, we had to keep brewing it once a year. Five hop varieties go into each batch at four stages of the brewing process to combine a hoppy India Pale Ale with a rich, dark malt base for a full-bodied ale that’s big on flavor.

The name and label on the can look better than the product. Black IPAs are hit or miss for me. This falls somewhere in between. I prefer them a little more malty than this. Decent balance though. A bit thin...almost like a hoppy brown ale. Got a single in a trade, but don't think I would get much more of this.

Had to buy this a) for the name and b) because I love black IPAs. Comes out of the can a slightly hazy sepia with a thick, fluffy, persistent khaki head that leaves substantial lacing. Roast malt aroma has a strong woody hop overtone and hints of caramel and chocolate. Flavor is quite hoppy but not bitter, with notes of semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and roast malt. Texture is on the thin side, and not too fizzy, but that is a minor downer. Drinking beer for a good cause - does it get any better?

Tall boy can from @D3atlanta/Sam. Thin black pour with a tall light tan head. Nice lacing and carbonation. Light roasted malt profile. Ample earthy hops, light pine. Some cocoa. Flavor is roasted malts, chocolate, pine. Decent light hops bitter linger. Thank you Sam; very drinkable.

A deep brown-black in color with a loose-frothy, three finger, light brown head rising briefly above. Settles into a thin ringlet. Light roastiness in the nose. Grassy, floral hops in a roasted caramel-molassess body. Think and tarlike on the palate
