Way back in 1985, Ed McNally and Brewmaster Bernd Pieper decided to make a big, round, rich, full-bodied brown ale in the English style - a beer that bore no resemblance to the standard Canadian pub fare. They had no idea if anyone would appreciate their efforts, but it seemed to be a thing worth doing. And at worst, they’d have a great beer in which to drown their sorrows. A few weeks later, Bernd came back with a batch of brown ale steeped in bold flavours. Ed was delighted, and predicted that it would be tough sell. He was right, but there have always been people who appreciate it. And we’ll always appreciate them.

This was the free beer provided by a participant at the 2006 hockey pool. Decent aroma, but nothing to write home about. Slightly malty. The colour was an almost reddish colour. It felt 'perky' on the tongue, but the favour didn't thrill me.

Bottle. Colour - transparent amber, generous cream coloured head. Aroma - malt, caramel, hops. Mouthfeel - medium bodied. Flavour - metallic caramel with grainy hints. Overall - Worth trying once but never again.

Clear red beer, smells like malt "extract" as in it literally smells like someone artificially created this beer, with all the right components for a malty english ale, but instead it seems like a slightly watery artificial malt tea. The flavours just don't coalesce. You can literally taste water/malt/hop flavour and light fruit yeast all separately.... does that warrant points? I think not... too bad.

Pours a copper/brown color leaving a thin ring of head and sticky lacing. smell of caramel and yeast. Tastes like it smells with some nutty flavor. Not to light, not to heavy and goes down pretty easy...yum!

Pours a nice deep brown with red hues. Good size creamy off white head. Some sloppy lacing. Head disappears leaving a thin soapy layer. Smells malty, sweet. Flavour of weak caramel, light malt, not much hops to be found. Thin mouth with medium carbonation. Not terrible but not great.

I am not a big fan of big rock and I really could never see myself buying a 6 pack of anything they offer.. thankfully they do have a variety pack that I picked up this afternoon... this one has been my favorite so far.. it had a touch of caramel with a dark look.. large head.. good finish... a typical ale.

This beer is a reddish copper colour with a thin white head. The aroma is very malty with some caramel and hoppish tones. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and mild carbonation. The flavour was a combination of toffee and malt with a finishing kick of bitterness.

The Big Rock Traditional Ale is brewed according to the Bavarian Law of Purity, which I guess is what makes this a traditional ale. It's a coloured beer with a reddish hue. The aroma is that of sweet malts with some grainy hints. I couldn't distinguish any hops. The flavour was average. As with the aroma, I could not detect any hops in the sweet malts were definitely there. A bitter finish topped it all off.

Excellent crystal clear reddish copper in colour, small tan head that quickly vanashed; a good swirl gives some spotty lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, slight nut, earthy and aromatic. Warm and a bit sweet too. Taste: I've never been a fan of this beers' flavour but it does have lots of malts and some bitterness and a slight sour undertone. The mouthfeel is pretty good but suffers from too much carbonation. Light bodied. Has a good malty / bitter split for the aftertaste. Just order something else, please.

This was my draught beer of choice for the last few years of living in Calgary (up until 1996), and I hadn't had one since then. My God! Either it has changed for the worse or my beer tastes have improved greatly since then; I'm not sure which is true. Appearance colour-wise was still nice, although it arrived with nil head above a nice dark amber body. A large problem on the latest examples - I had two with lunch today - was that it was served just too damned cold. Aroma, if there was any, was non-existent, and likewise the taste. Seemingly frozen out of existence was any sense of taste or aftertaste, with only a nondescript mouthfeel. The bastards might just as well put the glass into the freezer and been done with it. Olive Garden, you should know better. I'll have to try this again at home; surely it must deserve another chance as a beer I used to adore came up not at all good today.
