Yards has recreated General Washington Tavern Porter - a dark beer brewed with molasses. General George Washington originally created this porter to satisfy the thirsts of his field officers. Washington's fondness for Colonial Philadelphia-style porter is reflected in this historic recipe.

Pours an opaque coffee brown that lets daylight through only at the bottom and has a thick light tan head. Aroma has a strong note of molasses, plus tones of roast malt, caramel, and miso. Flavor echoes the molasses and roast malt of the aroma, though the other tones are not quite as strong; some sweetness comes through. Texture is smooth, if a bit thin, and fairly fizzy. A toast to the Father of this country, and his great ideas - may we recapture and remember them!

Pours a black color. Smell is mikd, some coffee. Taste is stronger than the smell, lots of coffee, some bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

This beer pours an opaque black with a thin khaki head that disappears almost as soon as it arrived. The aroma is dark and rich with notes of burnt wood, chocolate and coffee. The taste is deep and smooth, tickling the tongue with hints of malt, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Next to the cool bottling, this beer is one of my favorites.

My wife brought this bottle back from her trip to Philly. Pours a dark mahogany color with a decent tan head that left a tiny bit of lacing. Scent is sweet, mostly. Lots of dark fruits; dates and cherries mostly. Very nice. Flavor is okay. Same fruit flavors as in the scent but they’re not as ...spry. There’s an off aftertaste here, as if they were trying to go for a mineral mouthfeel and it affected the flavor a touch. Still not bad, though. Mouthfeel definitely has some mineral to it and is well carbonated. I’m not a big Porter fan normally but I try to rate to style. I gotta say this is one of the better Porters I’ve had, but not the best. I wonder how close this is to Gen. Washington’s intention.

Extremely dark reddish-brown body with a light tan head that’s light and airy. The head fades to a thinner, wetter coating. The aroma is slightly sharp, with molasses and brown sugar. It’s got the same dark sugary flavor with a mild fruitiness. Slightly chocolatey and nutty. Really interesting beer that is bigger than what I had expected from a porter.

I poured too fast, took the head 10 minutes to go away. This is a hearty porter, sweet and malty with a decent aftertaste. It's a little too hoppy/lively, and would do better if that aspect was toned down slightly. All around a very good porter.

Every time I taste a creation from Yards, I become rapidly impressed. The General Washington Tavern Porter replicates a brewing recipe that does indeed date back to the American Revolution. As a matter of fact, Old GW himself created this porter to satisfy the thirst of his field officers while fighting off General Cornwallis and the invading British army. GWTP starts out with a thick foamy creamy mocha like head, leaving nice remains around the glass after dissolving. A dark chestnut brown hue sits underneath. The aromas of chestnuts, and other assorted nuttiness exist, along with subtle scents of coffee. A distinctive hop bitterness is akin to GWTP's taste, with a light burnt quality to the malt. Molasses is part of the recipe, and it is definitely noticeable. This buttery smooth porter also has some notes of cream and coffee. A mild hop aftertaste finishes off this chewy, musty, and nougat like porter. A very fine beverage indeed. George Washington would salute Yards of Philly if he were here today.

This is a decent porter. I've seen it on sale from $14.50 down to $9.00 per sixpack. It is a bottle conditioned beer. Very dark when poured, a little sweet, roasty with a fruity flavor as well as an alcohol taste. It's an ok beer for $9.00/sixpack, $14.50 is pushing it.

Pours a dark indigo color with a very short lived head. Sweet, malty aroma of cloves and roastedness. Malty, caramel, toffee and sweet. An interesting beer that changed greatly from sweet and fruity to roasted and portery as I drank it.
