Full disclosure: Brown is one of my least-liked styles, and Deschutes is one of my all-time favorite and perennial go-to breweries. That stated, I’m quite disappointed. I either got a bad six-pack or most everyone else who rated this before me has had this on tap, which is far different from the bottle that poured into the glass before me. I’m just going to list the highlights here: Pours with virtually no head/lacing, is rather flat, and has a touch of corn (DMS?) in it. This just totally lacks any complexity whatsoever. Granted, Browns aren’t known for any eccentricities, but I was hoping for more from my beloved Deschutes. Overall, this is simply a mediocre Brown.

must...rate...to...style... I'm very impressed. It's not nearly as strong tasting as most Barley Wines. With most of this style I like to rush out and get several bottles to see how they age, but I gotta say, this tastes wonderfully aged straight out of the bottle.Very nicely done! Appearance is a cloudy amber with virtually no head which is fine for the style, but a touch of lace would have been nice. Aroma is is of dark fruits and... Damn, ever have a problem where every time you try to smell the beer you end up taking a sip before you get a good read? There's a hint of hops in there and maybe a touch of spice likely from the wine barrels. It's very subtle and quite mellow. Flavor is smooth and mellow with some dark fruits (raisens, prunes mostly) and a hop presence that lingers but it hard to pinpoint. This is an extremely well-balanced beer. Palate is thick and almost chewy and somewhat crisp for the style as opposed to being sickly sweet. Overall I think this is excellent comparing well with with anything out there. I really don't understand how anyone could give this less than a 4 without ignoring the style. Kudos to Deschutes!

This is a very nice Bock. I wish I'd taken better notes. I poured this and then started talking so I'm left with about a 1/2 inch left in the glass, but it's great. I visited the brewery today and picked this up there, I'm kicking myself for not getting more at $2.50 a bomber. Pours a clear brown. Scent is mainly of caramel, but a hop presence is noted. Taste is caramel with more hops present. It's rather complex. Overall it's really good and one of the best domestic Bocks I've had.

What’s with all the new brewery stuff on the shelves lately that are so-so at best? I’m thinking this brewery and Prohibition line in particular. Pours a dark brown with a little bit of a head and some lacing. Scent is roasted dark fruits and coffee. Flavor is sour and kind of like peat on top of the caramel/coffee, but it’s weak. Both the flavor and the palate are very thin. Overall, save your money.

Fantastic brewery, Elysian. I gotta check it out when I get back up to Seattle. 22oz bottle Now *this* is what a porter should look like, IMO. Pours black with a nice thick tan head that lasts a long time and leaves an beautiful lace down the sides of the glass. Bravo. Smells immediately of coffee with dark malts hiding. Tastes really good but it's not very complex and is almost thin. Coffee is there for sure. I'm getting a tiny bit of Cascade hop flavor, but just enough for interest and not enough to make it a stout by a long shot. Mouthfeel is good but a little thin, again. Drinkability is high because there's nothing objectionable here and it goes down very well. I'm sure I'll be reaching for this one again.
