Deschutes Brewery’s latest seasonal beer BuzzSaw Brown celebrates the early days of Bend, Oregon, as a timber town when two of the country’s largest pine sawmills operated on the banks of the Deschutes River using the cold rushing water to move logs and cool the mill workings. Milder than Deschutes Brewery’s flagship, Black Butte Porter, BuzzSaw Brown is biscuity in character with a light hop profile. BuzzSaw Brown is an easy-drinking beer that is refreshing after a hard day’s work.

Full disclosure: Brown is one of my least-liked styles, and Deschutes is one of my all-time favorite and perennial go-to breweries. That stated, I’m quite disappointed. I either got a bad six-pack or most everyone else who rated this before me has had this on tap, which is far different from the bottle that poured into the glass before me. I’m just going to list the highlights here: Pours with virtually no head/lacing, is rather flat, and has a touch of corn (DMS?) in it. This just totally lacks any complexity whatsoever. Granted, Browns aren’t known for any eccentricities, but I was hoping for more from my beloved Deschutes. Overall, this is simply a mediocre Brown.

12 oz bottle. Pours a light brown with a creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet roasted grains and cola.
The flavor is sweet sugary nutty malts and cola, with some light acidic bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a little sharp carbonation.
Overall, I don't really care for the sweet nutty browns. -

Biscuity indeed. More refreshing than most browns, and very well balanced. I'll buy this before just about any other brown...it's still a brown, so don't expect it to knock your socks off, but it's good, and highly drinkable.

Pours a dark brown color with an medium sized foamy head. Aroma is sweet malts, nutty, and some fruity hops. Taste is nutty, caramel, with a lasting bitterness. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is sweet malts and light hopped aftertaste.

This is a pretty average beer. It poured a nice brown color with lots of white head. This beer had tons of lacing. I got Roasted malt flavor that was a little bitter. It smelt a little like caramel.

I liked this one for a brown. It was very light but had a nice nutty and good balance. Poor light brown with a bit of a head. I enjoyed the light to meduim body. A very easy drinking beer.

This brown ale pours a dark brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is sweet malts, biscuit, chocolate and some fruit. Medium bodied brow ale. Malts are caramel and sweet, with some dark fruit and chocolate. Hops are floral and earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. It a touch over the top with the sweet biscuty malts, but not in ant real objectionable way. Very drinkable brown ale, decent session ale. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet and slightly hoppy.

An attractive brown coloured ( what else!) ale with a beautiful creamy, thick tan head. Smells mostly of caramel style malts, slightly roasty, and a tinge of hop. Nice smooth malty taste, slightly bitter, light cofeeish hints and a slight butteryness. Some hops near the end add a small "zing" and help overall. For me this beer has an odd sensation on the palate, it seems well carbonated but yet is smooth.odd yet nice. A very easy to drink. A good brown with slightly more hops than usual for the style.

Combined rating (2x sampled, once on draft, another by bottle): Poured an amber brown color, nice off-white orangey almost looking head, good retention, decent lacing. The aroma was of light roasted darker malts. The flavor was comparable, light roasted malts, some bitterness to the malts (not seemingly from the hops), firm nut presence, and a touch of berries in the finish. Fairly balanced sweet/bitterness, and finishing with a bit of dryness. Moderate mouthfeel for the style.
