Our Brewmasters' Release - Pitch Black IPA is a Pacific Northwest twisted tribute to an IPA style of beer. It is almost a traditional IPA but it is instead brewed to the emerging style of Cascadian Dark. We add a modest amount of a specially made debittered black malt to give this IPA a very dark color but without the characteristic dark malt flavors. Pitch Black IPA is hopped generously in the brewhouse and then again later during the dry hopping process. Hopheads of the world will certainly enjoy this dark version of IPA, as will beer drinkers looking for something new and experimental to fill their pint glass. The "W" Brewmasters' Release Series is from Widmer Brothers. A new beer every year. Built from the ground up by our hardworkin' brewmasters. Traditional, experimental, anything goes. Here's to trying new things.

Pours a lovely opaque sable with a minimal head - but this may have been an artifact of the pour. Aroma is not strong but invitingly hoppy with a bit of a smoky hint. Flavor is hoppy and rather bitter with a malty undertone and just a hint of unsweet chocolate. Texture is fairly smooth, yet lively and tingly. If you like both IPAs and stouts, I’m sure you will dig this one.

Pours a black color. Smell is a bit hoppy. Taste is a good balance of hops and roasted malts, a touch of coffee. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer.

From Haggen (Burlington, WA) in a bomber. "Always bet on black" says the label. Maybe. Head was a thin, tan-hued creation over a (surprise) pitch black body. For the nose, there were hops and a little bit of malt. Flavour featured not a lot of hops for an IPA, along with malt. Great, smooth mouth. Even finish, hops and malt were balanced, maybe an inkling of pine as well.

12oz bottle -
So my local grocery store started carrying this and while the price is really nice, the beer isn't so great. A below-average showing for the style, it lacks any resemblance of an IPA, instead borders on being a weak dry stout and a bad pale ale. It's a solid looking beer in my glass though, but it needs a whole lot more of a lot of things to be even considered average. -

no longer W10 but a 4 pack of pitch black bottled 3/11. citrusy and bitter hops atop some roasty black malt. not overly complex and no mouth watering character to it, but a decent representation of the style.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a smallish creamy light tan head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.
The aroma is roasted malts and some piney fruity hops.
The flavor is roasted / charred malts and a little fruit with a good sized burnt, piney bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and kind of watery.
Overall, a decent black IPA...a bit pricey at $9 for a 4 pack though. -

This is a black colored beer with brown notes woven in. A fluffy textured, light tan head rises above. There some hang time. It settles eventually into a moderate soapy ringlet atop the body and splotches of film aside the glass. There's a big, pleasant hoppy, citric nose. The tasting carries forth that hoppy presence with a well crafted blending of bready malt. A light-medium body with a big carbonation presence. Overall this is a very good beer.

Tasted on tap at the Celebrator Anniversary Party on 2/14/2010. This IPA pours a medium black color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is malty, chocolate, hoppy and floral. A medium bodied IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet, chocolate and coffee. The hops are earthy and floral. A nice medium bitterness black IPA. Nice carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is crisp and clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This was a pleasant surprise from Widmer. I’m not a big fan of all of the new black (D)IPAs and still found this beer quite enjoyable. There’s a healthy if restrained roasted/chocolate malt note. The hops are floral and piney, strong but not harsh. It’s quite dry, which is very good for this sub-style. It’s a creamy, rich beer that drinks bigger than its abv. I assume this beer is a limited edition, which is really a shame as it’s quite good.
