We're brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self-righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it --- Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale --- serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We're certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we're simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When you're good, you're good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this ale is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as the Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this ale was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didn't last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldn't be any more. For us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this ale. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self-righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure. First Release Date: January 2009 Hop Variety: Chinook, Simcoe & Amarillo Stats: ALC/VOL 8.7%, 90 IBUs

I have come to find the the blend of Simcoe and Amarillo smells a lot like Juicy Fruit gum. I love that smell. Blend that with some roasty notes and we have this beer. Smells great.
3 tones are shown here. Black on top, brown in the middle and dark red at the bottom. It occurs to me that this is becase I’m using a white wine glass (smart). No head which is a let down.
Sort of a coffee and cream flavor with a with a big bitterness. You can tell that the bitterness is from the roasted grain and hops. Nice.
Med body with a dry finish.
I think this is another top hotch hoppy beer from our friends at Stone.

Rerate, 355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.7%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large beige head. Dryish roasty aroma blends in with some fruity hoppy notes, hints of liquorice and sea water. Medium sweet flavour with distinct roasty notes, strong coffee, hints of liquorice and chocolate, followed by a very hoppy finish with resinous and grapefruity notes. Original rating: Shared bottle at hotel room tasting. Black colour, beige head. Very good aroma and flavour, hoppy and moderately roasty. Will definitely buy again when / if I can find it.

Very enjoyable. The nice head recedes but lasts till the end and leaves loads of lace. Aroma and flavour have the roasted malt and hops blended to perfection. Full bodied mouthfeel. I can see why this is ranked #1 in this style. Cheers.

Pours out extremely dark brown almost black with a massive lingering tan head. The aroma is mostly of hops. The mouthfeel is rich and thick. The taste is good but all I can describe is the hops. It's a little bitter but not so bad I can't drink it. Not something I would be interested in drinking again. It's so hoppy I wound up pouring out 3/4 of the bomber.

Purchased this one in a liquor mart on the Sunset Blvd. in L.A. Pours a dark brown colour with a frothy beige head, extreme retention and creamy-soapy lacing. Smells like an IPA with the pine aromas, grapefruit and warm alcohol grass of an Imperial one. Not much roasted malts felt (just seen so far). Wet mouthfeel with not much dryness from the hops and medium-bodied. Hard to even taste the roasted dark malt or any malts. Feels just like a strong American IPA.

Not sure what i bought, definitely a dark ale. 8.7% alcohol was hidden nicely,Great carbonation. Very nicely balanced. Good beer. Not sure what all the hype and high ratings are about, i have had better.

Sampled from bottle pours blackened-ruby with a creamy tan head. Roasted malt, dark fruit and piney hop aroma. Pleasantly bitter. Roasted dark malt and aggressive American hop flavor. Full-bodied and very drinkable. Stone can do no wrong.

I am a Bastard, (by definition) and appreciate both single and double-but for my $$ SSR is my go to domestic-since the double ran out...Its STRONG, dense, has a ok flavor-a bit o dirt, but clean finish-yea some of that dirt yeast in the finish...but it does not hurt come the morning. Pretty Damn Good!

Another of my Charleston expedition acquisitions... this one packs a punch! Pours deep, rich brown to almost absolute black with a more generous deeply tanned head that I would have imagined. There's enough lacing to make a meal off of. Aroma is chocolate, rosted malt and molassess. Smooth to the pallette and delightfully full-bodied. Flavor matched aroma with the addition of a hint of piney-citrus aroma - barely perceptable, but a nice welcome presence - along with bitter chocolate. Wow! Worthy.

Pours a dark black/brown with the consistency of chocolate syrup. Huge white, fluffy head that takes it time. Aroma is very nice and strong. Taste is full bodied. For a stronger beer it is surprisingly mild in it intensity. Will have again and again. Excellent beer. BEWARE, this will hit you hard.

Glad to find this in Tennessee finally. Coffee brown black pour with a thick sustained beige head which leaves large chunks of heavy lacing. Rich aromas of earthy hops, rich cocoa, toasted malts, light grapefruit, very slight molasses. Taste is bold with earthy, grapefruit and light pine hops upfront nicely offset by toasted malted sweetness, a bit of semi-sweet chocolate, some brown sugar and molasses, but the hops dominate leaving a very nice subdued long bitter linger. Best Black IPA I've had so far - Bravo Stone!
