Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

I tried this beer on December 18, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark brown, almost black colour with a thin white head. The aroma was weak, but consisted of roasted malt and licorice. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was bitter coffee, smoked wood, licorice, and roasted malt...with a subtle dryness to it.

Pours out a solid black color with a nice tan foamy head. The aroma is mostly hops and alcohol. The mouthfeel is solid and thick. The taste is just roasted malts and not much else. Still a good beer worth having again.

Very dark brown colour pour. Large tan head thins but survives till the end. Nice lacing. Thin mouthfeel but smooth. I don’t get much of an aroma, just a little roasted malt. Flavour has a slight sweetness, roasted malt and a touch of bitterness at the end. Very drinkable, especially if you find it on draught.

A solid black appearance with a beige head. The aroma contains some coffee, espresso, chocolate. The flavor is very dry and somewhat bitter with some dark chocolate, licorice, and coffee. Some vanilla showing up in the aftertaste. Overall a very nice porter.

355 ml bottle, as Southern Tier Porter Dark, at Plan B, Copenhagen. Black colour, huge beige head. Lovely vinous and fruity aroma, notes of American hops and orange maramalade. The roasty notes are very subdued. The flavour is very moderately roasty, notes of chocolate and moderate American hops, not very sweet. Decent beer.

Pours very dark bown with reddish tinge. The 1-inch off-white head dissapted quickly but left nice lacing throughout. Nose is nutty and sweet. Good and appropriate carbonation. Even though this has a fairly thin mouthfeel, the taste is substantive. There is brown sugar, roasted nuts, coffee and cocoa supported well by the malt backbone. The finish shows some mild hoppy bitterness which was a nice surprise. I would have this again for sure.

Another brewery in South Florida. The beer world is getting better each week. Tried the porter, of course, first. Nice black colored, bright red tinged beer. Big light tannish head, frothy in texture rises above. Bot much hang time but nice lacing left behind. I got roasted malt and coffee in the nose. A thin bodied beer with medium carbonation gives it that appealing smoothness. The tasting is all about roasting. Roasted malt, roasted coffee bean. Really a nice porter, though not the best I’ve had.

Pours nice dark brown with a good size tan head that lasts for a few minutes. Good lacing. Smells good, some coffee, mostly malts in the aroma, the colder it is the more hops seem to come out. Flavour has some coffee aswell with a roasted quality and a smooth mouthfeel and a bitter follow. Pretty good overall.

Third brew from this brewer to come to the LCBO. Second porter of the night to review. Pretty similar to the Canadian one I had earlier (Picaroons Man's Best Friend Porter) in looks: dark brown with red highlights, creamy beige head, good retention, decent lacing. This one does not smell as hoppy as the other, but more on the burnt roasted malts. The hop appears in the taste though. Mild coffee and because it is more on the bitter side, I do not taste much sweet chocolate. Smooth textured mouthfeel and good drinkability. Nice bitter aftertaste. Preferred the look of the Picaroons, but this one is a bit better on the other levels. Well brewed.
