I wasn't very impressed with this beer. More of a brown than a black colour. Aroma was certainly hoppy, but maybe too hoppy. Flavour was as one sided as the aroma with the beer lacking any malt character whatsoever.

It's been a long time since I've had a Longshot. This one didn't let me down at all. Way to go, Rodney Kibzey! Pours a dark black, not pitch black. Still somewhat visible. Nose is cascadian all the way, hard to ignore it. Taste is hoppy, creamy palate, burnt tobacco embers, cigars, smokey the beer and coffee grounds.

this one is pretty well done...works as a dark beer and a hoppy beer, not just one or the other. enjoyed almost as much as the SN juniper black, which had a touch more complexity. super smooth, roasted, and hoppy. nicely done.

Rich, smoky aroma has a strong charcoal overtone and hints of coffee, nuts and burnt grass. It pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thick, frothy, rather persistent beige head. Smoky flavor has tones of roast coffee, unsweet chocolate and burnt hops along with nutty and barbecue sauce hints. Smooth texture has a fine fizz and leaves a smoky, slightly hoppy finish.

Pours darker than a well on a moonless night. Slight head that quickly fades leaving lacing in rings to the very end. Aroma of chocolate and coffee with flavors matching, but intensified. Slightly hoppy with a pleasant bitter finish. Nice.

Very nice black ipa, the body is black (of course) a decent head fades but leaves some nice thick lace. Flavors of citrus, and grassy hops, fade into a roasted chocolate with a nice bitter finish. It would be nice to see this make their regular lineup.

I would say that this could be the best black IPA that I had. Found it similar to Cigar City's Jose Marti Porter, with that tangy citrus hops blended with the chocolate malts. Decent balance, with a dark black appearance. Not super thick. This Category 23 variety pack is worth getting. May just buy another 6.

I'm sorry I only had one of these. It pours, as I like my beers, with the darkness of an unlit midnight. A big frothy textured light brown head rises robustly above. Great hang time on this one as it sits in thick foam atop the beer. It settles eventually into a thin ringlet atop the body and light dusting of film aside the glass. The nose is light and complex. Grassy and lighter citric hops. Some burnt sugar. The tasting is far more complex with the same grass and citric hops along with some coffee notes in the roasted malt. Nice full body with well crafted carbonated giving a nice smooth creaminess on the tongue. I liked this one.

Pours a very dark brown, great head, and the lacing is superb .. . wow!! this is some tasty stuff! finally a well made black ipa has hit my lips, i had given up ages ago!! .. light roast and a light bitterness, and such a clean mouth- like a bridge made of duct tape .. . kudos to this home brewer for making a bastard style enjoyable .. . I've got so many lawyers lined up to see me, you'd think I had tobacco leaking out of my breast implants..
