This beer was inspired by the writings of Graham Wheeler, a noted English Beer Historian. Mr. Wheeler describes the original Porters as: "... the least understood of the old British beers. The subject (of the Porter Beer Style) is complicated and confused because porter’s heyday lasted from about 1700 to the pale ale revolution of the mid 1800’s. During that time it passed through many transformations. Porter was simply a mixture of two brown beers. The only characteristic that set the porter apart from any other beer of the day was that porter was deliberately soured by adding a percentage of sour beer to freshly brewed beer. The original porters were not, as is commonly supposed, jet-black in colour, but a translucent brown. They had a rich, smoky flavor derived from the use of brown malt and a winey aftertang produced by the deliberate souring, highly regarded by Londoners." Our interpretations is a Brown Porter based on the style popular in 1870’s London. It was brewed with mostly floor malted English malts including the famed pale ale malt, Maris Otter. A touch of smoked malt produced by Briess Malting Company of Chilton Wisconsin was also used. Half of the batch went through a souring fermentation, in the traditional way, to promote the characteristic wine-like acidity. Lastly the beer was aged on wood to extract sweetness from toasted oak.

I don't think New Glarus knows how to make a bad beer as most of what I have had has been outstanding, and this beer is no exception. Based on 18th century British porters, one gets a brown beer that is full of flavour with nuts and coffee and a sour finish. Great idea for a beer.

was able to sample another bottle: the exact same- putrid stuff .. the worst new glarus, maybe even worse than the alt .. if you are saving this, drink it now or play a mean joke on someone .. .
thanks to John for this, so this review pains me .. . Pours a murky dark tan, low foam .. . smell is of light tart cherry, wet socks, and stinky mud .. . thin, muddled and not at all enjoyable .. . i read other recent reviews about how this is starting to fade- this is long gone .. .

i knew this would be unique, and it sure was. notes of a traditional side, but muted, mixed with oak, vanilla, roasted malt. a weird mix for sure, and like has already been said, not a beer i'd return to much, but maybe the most unique beer i;ve ever had.

Bottle: Poured a light clear black color porter with a medium foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of tart notes and roasted malt is quite unique but very interesting. Taste is dominated by tart and sour notes with lingering notes of roasted malt. Very unique with loads of sour notes with are-off-setted by some roasted malt. Body is quite light with good carbonation. Not sure I would want to drink this on a regular basis but very glad I tried this one.

Big props to pfoxyjohn for sending me this throwback. Nice clear deep brown tea pour with a thin head and a touch of lacing. Sour vinegar up front and potent in the nose with some underlying cocoa, slight smokiness, and a very slight lemony scent. Taste is at first tart and sour then some cocoa and malts. This is not for the faint of heart or for any newbies. The historic notions of this concoction are not to be dismissed - it took a lot of balls for New Glarus to brew this one.

A gift from my friend Mr. Pfister. Has an aroma of sour burnt rasins. Thin head and the color was not what I would expect from something called a porter. The taste was sour but not in an offensive manner. Once you get past the sour note the flavor of toffee shows up is very carbonated. To me this is not a beer you'd want to try and convert somebody with but for those who understand and appreciate a good beer this is something they might want to try.

A sour vinegar scent cuts right through a strong aroma of coffee and leather. It's completely unexpected and amazingly inviting....I love it! Mottle brown body with a collapsing tan head and spotty lacing. Roasty and bitter, the nice sourness tickles the taste buds. Fresh roasted coffee, toasted nuts, chocolate, tobacco and that wonderful sour vinegar. What a great use of sour malt, this beer is incredible and deserves great recognition.

Wow. Not really sure what to think of this one. Totally came out of left field. It really made me redefine what I thought I knew was a porter. Has the style changed that much over the decades?
The one pours out a maple syrup looking brown, mostly clear with a 1" light tan head. I knew it was going to be different when the beer was transparent. Aroma was very lactic-y. Meat marinade, light chocolate, fingernail polish, brown sugar, subtle smoke and roasted nuts. Clearly not what I'm used to, but intense and intriguing at the same time. Flavor is acidic, yet the underlinging sweetness really plays well with each other. Lots of chocolate and wine up front, light roasted malts and smoke about mid-palate, toffee, black cherrie puree, and buried is the vanilla to finish it off. Just a scramble of flavors, yet it works so well and it so different. Kinda reminded me of Rodenbach Grand Cru mixed with porter. -

On tap at the Old Fashioned, mighty fine in every way- Pours a slight reddish colour with a generous beige head. Aroma is instantly carmel with some raisin and fig notes. Taste is full yet so light in the finish. Delicate in every way, and sweet sweet notes but not cloying. Some honey maybe some maple syrup midpalate. A new favourite of mine. :)
