Hoppy Stony Face Red Ale 2.1 cheapdark From a big bomber that came from califor-eye-aye; big thanks to cquiroga for this collectable piece. Poured into a big glass mug. Cloudy maroon with a rocky alabaster head. Smell is just fresh and yeasty bearish. First taste is choco impression that immediately goes alky and then back to carob. Each swig provides that evolution of taste. Rather strong, let me check the alky; says 5.6% but it sure tastes much more potent than that, mor like 7%. Not sure if you would call this balanced, considering the bitter malt in there. Strong, with plenty of beer personality going on here. Not quite the carbonation that I have become used to in the other hoppy face beers. Finish is long lingering malt and alky bitter medicine. Tho not tremendously enjoyable in flavor, I did rather take pleasure in the opportunity to try this brew. Thanks Chris, I owe you ten! You are certainly a generous trader. Hoppy face stoney red. A pretty average red ale, but still well done. I admit I only bought this because of the label, and was expecting a subpar brew, but I enjoyed this actually. Not terribly sweet, a little bit of hoppiness, and a nice finish. might pick up again vs. other options.

Good blend of malts and hops here. aromatic, dark (for the style), and flavorful. I wasn't expecting much from this brewery after dumping their holiday ale, so this was a very pleasant surprise. 1/09-had an off aroma...maybe the glass they served in. i'll wait to have another off one to downgrade...or not.

First of all, this beer seriously needs to change its name...Foamy Face, perhaps? I popped the cap, a huge cloud of smoke came out, and then all hell broke loose. Luckily, I wasn't planning to drink it out of the bottle, so a glass and the kitchen sink were nearby. The sheer volume of foam that came pouring out of this was unbelievable; I have never seen anything like it. It left a lot of lacing on the glass, needless to say. Smells of flowery hops, and a little bread-like. The appearance itself was opaque, with A LOT of floaties swimming about. This did impact the taste somewhat, adding a bready flavor to the already powerful hops. A little toffee in there, too. Goes down creamy and smooth; a real delight to drink. Seeing as how no one else experienced the problem with the foam, I will definitely try this out again.

Pours with a three finger thick, amber-tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a brilliantly clear, concentrated, ruby red color. Aromatic notes of sweet fruit (berries), caramel malts, toasted biscuits and herbal, almost pine-like hops are noticeable in the aroma. After trying to dissect the aroma for a bit a mix of malt and hop character makes me think of sharply tart grapefruit and lightly roasted coffee (or perhaps burnt tea leaves), the combination of which leaves me slightly confused because I swear I get a hint of cinnamon. An interesting aroma, that has a good mix of aromatic components.

A light carbonation cannot hide a smooth, almost creamy mouth feel that just coats the mouth. Sweet caramelized malt notes are quite noticeable, but are not quite as dominant as a biting hop character the is definitely bitter, but also adds touches of citrus and a definite mix of pine notes that leans towards menthol in a long finish. I would not call this beer a malt or hop focused brew (at least by today’s standards), but that does not mean that this beer does not have a lot of flavor, as both the malt and hop character play a prominent role here. This is almost like a precursor to Arrogant Bastard, or perhaps better put, like a little brother. As the beer warms a bit a hint of roast coffee flavors start to peak through.

I remember always trying Hoppy’s brews at beer festivals in the mid 90s and I am pleasantly surprised so far by the beers as I go back and try them again. A solid, easily drinkable, yet full flavored brew.

Poured a dark, reddish brown color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, toffee, dried fruits, and a citrus hoppiness. Taste of caramel malts, nuts, citrus fruits, some chocolate, and ending with a low hoppy bitterness. Average mouthfeel.

Reddish amber color. Large head. Aroma is sweet chocolate malts. A medium bodied American Pale Ale (red Ale) Malty and hoppy. Malts are slightly roasted, somewhat sweet and with a very definite chocolate flavor component. Hops are mildly grapefruity and kind of spicy. Very drinkable APA, but not as hoppy as most. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is bitter
