The Prior is the leader of a smaller abbey community. He’s the “primo inter pares” (the first among equals). With its 9 % this dark ale with has a bitter sweet taste due to the roasted malt. A slightly creamy body, with an aroma of roasted malt, yeast, caramel, & toffee; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, yeast, rich caramel, light fruit, raisons, and some spice The hoppy characteristics of all the Watou ales are prominently present, to be recognized by a persistent creamy foam Our Prior is refermented in the bottle, only good to drink after a few months aging, which is done at the brewery, and ready to be aged and enjoyed for many years.

Clear dark ruby brown with light brown lacing foam head. Aroma is strong beer, light caramel, bit hoppy, lots of grass. Tastes perfect, a decent beer, strong. (Velp 201408)

Private import from the SAQ. Pours a hazy dark amber colour with lots of active carbonation of small bubbles. The head is creamy, becoming frothy and bubbly, lightly beige, with good retention and some foamy lace. Sour nose at first with a little chocolate, but then, aromas of toffee, raisins, other fruits and hints of anise (and other grass). The taste is pretty strong with metallic notes which gives out grassy hop and rusty water. The fruits does come out eventually and thankfully the finish is better and soft. Lots going on in this one, but not one I would buy more. Worth trying though.

Muddy ruby brown pour, short head reduced to a constant ring, some lacing. Ripe fruit aroma, sweet, almost stale, very earthy, Belgian yeasts, very light hops presence. Taste is forgettable, sweet ripe fruits, yeasts, eathy hops, more sweet, almost cardboardy. So so at best.

Pours a fairly cloudy deep brown, with red glints and a giant medium tan head that lasts forever. Smell is fruity, with raisins and plums coming through, along with brown-sugar maltiness and a bit of hot alcohol, rather nice. Tastes rather fruity, with malts, and earth, although it's so muddled that I have a hard time separating the different flavors before a metallic presence covers them. Mouthfeel is watery and rather thin, overall the metallic aspect dooms a nice start.

The first thing that strikes me is the aroma of cocoa powder. Like opening a can of Ghirardelli baking chocolate powder. A rum raisin undertone. I thought there would be some spices, like pepper or something, but I don't find any. Lots of raisiny sweetness. Subtle alcohol burn. Surprisingly light body.

This poured an amber color with a moderate beige head. The aroma is quite yeasty with some brown sugar, caramel, figs, raisins, cherries, and alcohol. Woooo nelly! The flavor is rather dry with more dark fruit, caramel, yeasty notes, brown sugar, and molasses. If someone doesn’t understand what an earthy character means have them try this beer. The alcohol shows through in the aftertaste but not overpowering. Overall a well done beer.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9%. Mahogany coloured beer with a nice beige head, no haziness. Malty aroma and flavour with notes of brown sugar, dried dark fruits and caramel, hints of spices. The aftertaste is spicy with a moderate hoppy bitterness. Not quite in the league of the trappists, but certainly a good beer.

Bottled. Amber colour with big beige creamy head. Aroma of raisins, malts and bananas. Flavour is metallic (strong metallic) with caramellish malty hints. Otherwise good, but the metallicness is ruining it. Aftertaste has some spices in it along with the caramellishness.

The aroma is sour to some extent with some sweetness and maybe some mustiness with some dark fruits like prunes or plums coming through with some nice maltiness and maybe spiciness. The appearance is a nice ruby red to burgundy in color when held to the light with a very large head on top that is light-tan in color, very carbonated and bubbly and remains only diminishing slightly while it sits in my goblet. The mouthfeel is full and creamy with good, solid malty complexity as well as fruity balance with a frothy to foamy palate. The flavor is of dark fruits along with plums or maybe figs with some nice yeasty overtones with an aftertaste that is smooth and creamy with some sweetness and a finish that is a bit dry but I contribute this characteristic to the higher ABV%. Overall, a very nice Belgian strong ale here and very smooth and easy to drink with no detection of alcohol with exception to the dryness and the warming sensation on the back end.
