Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper beeries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

bottle said best before 3/10. Drank in 8/10. There was sludge on the lip of the bottle after opening it. Some crud hanging to the insides that didn't wash off. But then I drank it and was not disappointed. It was suuper smokey, but I'm guessing the juniper berries died somewhere before 3/10, certainly by the time I opened (bought) this one. Besides the lack of juniper it was an enjoyable Norwegian smoked beer. I'll take sunturnbrew before this, though. Hoping for juniper berries next time I run across this beer.

KnoxBeerCrew tasting. Tall 500ml bottle. Medium brown pour, tight tan head, nice lacing. SMOKY aroma, leather, tobacco, then malty light sweet, hint of the junipers although SMOKE dominates. SMOKY flavor! Yeah for me. Love Smoked beers. Smoke, light malty sweetness, just a hint of spice and fruits, more smoke. Great smoky linger too. Yes. Just, yes.

500 ml capped bottle, Batch 264. Poured an unclear, unfiltered, hazy, ruby-brown coloured Ale with a generous three fingers beige pillowy head that had a very long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Soft carbonation. Great lacing. The aroma is roasted malts, smoke, roasted coffee beans, a noticeable alcoholic presence and vinous notes. The flavour is rich, a solid roasted and smokey malty backbone, fruity, dark berries, a light bitterness and may be a touch of sourness. The mouthfeel is sweety an overall very smooth. This full bodied Ale has a lingering smokey malty finish. The aftertaste brings a nice warming effect. A very tasting Ale. Perfect for giving a busy day a beautiful end.

probably the second smokiest brew i've ever had, after the Nogne O Sunternbrew. the smoke lended a nice smooth body to the beer, but it's definitely not one i could drink alot of. earthy herbal notes as well, and lots of burnt wood on the nose and palate.

This poured a brown color with a beige head. The aroma contains some herbal notes along with nutmeg, alcohol, raisins, and cherries. The flavor is rather sweet with a smokey presence. Do I taste BACON! Also some dark fruit and caramel showing. Overall this was an excellent beer.

Comes out of the tap a barely transparent mahogany-honey brown with a cream-white, fine-bubbled head. Rich, malty, smoked-wood aroma has an undertone of barbecue. Smoky, barbecue-like flavor is malty wit hints of spice, caramel and even sweetness. Tingly, lively texture rounds out a very tasty and distinctive beer.

Pours with a slightly cloudy, deep amber body topped by a thick, quickly disappearing head with lots of lacing. It’s smoky and malty with a slight sweetness and a little hop character. Medium bodied and very tingly from the carbonation.

Opaque deep amber, with little lacing and almost no head. Aroma of just-ignited pine tinder. Milk chocolate covered bacon flavor eases up into some nice caramel gooeyness. A bite of hops or maybe that's juniper at the end. Begs for some chicken fried steak, a big burger or other country food. Unusual, but not as over-the-top as I had feared.

Smells of smoke, wood, Gin, Some berries. Pours a reddish brown with ample carbonation and a nice white head. Medium body with a crisp finish. Taste is not too smoky(I was hoping for more) malty, some spice, wood and some berry fruitiness. Not too bad...
