One of the original Canadian Black IPAs. The Netherworld pours a very dark brown, almost black with a light brown bubbly cap. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, and citrus. The flavour is well balanced between the grapefruity hops and the coffee. Delicious!

Pours an average size frothy brownish head and has a dark amber/brown appearance. Decent lace. Aromas of earthy and resiny hops and dark chocolate, malty notes. Flavours of earthy hops, light spices, dark roasted malts, hints of chocolate, coffee and very faint maple/syrupy notes. Medium bodied, lively carbonation. Crisp and drying mouthfeel. Nice bitterness in the finish. Quite tasty but could only have a couple bottles per session

American Black Ale? What is that. Tastes like a porter with hops. Not bad though. Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee, although all mild. This is quite an acceptable beer. Medium body and mouthfeel.

The commercial releae of FMB's black IPA. Bottle: Pours a dark brown ale with amber highlights. frothy 2 finger off-white cap lasts. Decent lacing on the glass. Aromas of cocoa and lemons, some grapefruit, toffee and fresh roast coffee...different! Front side is mellow and chewy with roasty-caramel malts balanced well with lemon bittering, mid palate some fruit and nuttiness, goes dry in the finish with resinous bittering and charred husk astringence. Medium body, sandy-dry mouthfeel, smooth rounded character... a very approachable and quenching dark ale that defies classification.

Random in person trade from a Canadian guy at Dark Lord Day 2011. Great aroma of mild chocolate and roast malt with an assertive hop nose of citrus and pine. Ruby brown body with a huge tan head and sticky lacing. A bit thin on the palate and not too bitter, finishes slightly empty. Flavor is nice, but is nowhere as robust as the aromas would indicate. Hope that chap enjoyed the bottle of home brew I gave him.

Came in the Discover Pack.......a surprising dark brown pour with a huge foamy head. IPA is more typical of an IPA rather than a stout/porter. More citrusy hops than roasted malt. Flavour is a failed attempt at a black IPA however.....neither the IPA or porter flavours come through clearly.

Dark amber mysterious looking brew. Light tan head. Medium mouthfeel, malty, caramel aroma and bitterish taste, though not overly so. Overall, a nice beer.

Came in the Ontario Craft Brewer Discovery pack for the 2010 holidays. Written 6.5% ABV on the top label. Pours a dark brown colour and glows of ruby red through it. The head took some time to form (as it stayed small until the end of the pour). This one is beige, has decent lacing and keeps a good coating over the brew. The nose has mostly some hop showing, mixed with a little roasted malt. Nice smooth, silky and refreshing mouthfeel. Mild tasting with some coffee notes, burnt malt and hints of sour citrus in the finish, that disappears in the aftertaste. I do enjoy the different mix that this beer offers, but wish it would be stronger. Pretty refreshing for such a dark brew.

The beer poured a brownish-black with a thin foamy light brown head. The aroma is citrusy hops, pine, and roasted malt. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, coffee, and citrus. A little sourness on the tongue also exists.
