One of Fish Brewing’s speciality oak-aged beers, Detonator Doppelbock is a very strong lager dedicated to the removal of salmon-killing dams and the restoration of free-flowing rivers. The Mighty Fish Brewers condition Detonator in American oak wine barrels for three months. Then, as one of Cascadia’s lusty rites of Spring, Fish releases this astonishing lager to the rejoicing multitudes on Earth Day. The oak barrels that held Detonator come from one of Cascadia’s premier wineries. These barrels have already served Fish well by aging the first Oaken Ales, Leviathan Barleywine and Poseidon’s Imperial Stout. Oak-aged Doppelbock is a full-bodied lager with a deep reddish-brown color. We’ve brewed it in the classic German tradition, with noble Hallertauer and Columbus hops added to Pale and Chocolate malts and a large portion of Munich malt . As a result, Detonator offers a malty aroma and palate, which is balanced by its relatively dry finish, plus the subtly melded character of the robust ales and fine Merlot which previously filled the oak. This lager is available seasonally in bottles and on draught.

Bottle courtesy of mgermani: Poured a deep burgundy/brown color ale with a big foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with some very subtle banana bread notes. Taste is dominated by some sweet malt with some caramel and toffee notes. Full body with limited filtration with some good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. While I very much enjoyed this beer and usually I am not too stuck on style adherence, I thought this beer was slightly too sweet and missing some of the classic doppelbock ester.

Brown bottle, slightly taller and narrower than Canadian industry standard. Nicely painted label, spawned on May clipped into side of label. Deep, dark brown color, tan colored foam of small tight bubbles. Great head retention with thin lace strands coating the glass. Lots of aromas, toasted malt, prune/plum, maybe even some coffee. Smell intensifies as it warms. Full flavored beer with roasted malt, chewy and smokey. Balanced by some bitterness and slightly sour in the finish. Alcohol (8.5%) is well hidden, overall everything seems well balanced. A slow drinking enjoyable beer. My first Doppelbock, this has set the bar quite high for the style.

Bottle: Thanks Brian Puts a deep chestnut brown lager with some ruby highlights in the glass...3 finger tight pored cap lasts and laces well. Aroma of dark toasted breads, figs, mocha, grass some fusil, light woody tones...lush smell to this one. Profile: In the front side you bite down on dark (almost charred) toasty malts, this gives a burnt raisin toast effect as the woody-herbal Hallertauers dig in their heels to balance...mid palate this gets more complex: smoked figs, some walnut skin astringency, woody-earthy tones run just below the roast malts...surprisingly this rich dark lager finishes up dry with some hop bittering and charred black malt astringency taking over. A very good bock teasing sweetness bur never going there...covers it’s alcohol well, herbal hopping, earthy-wood tastes from the barrel aging...very well done drinkable dunkler bock.

Very dark brown body, with a frothy off white head that was thick and creamy with moderate retention. A very light hops aroma combined with coffee and chocolate makes for a pleasant aroma, but was very mild. The flavor consisted of a mild baker’s chocolate and roasted malts. There was a slight warming alcohol and a touch of hops in the finish. Enjoyed this beer a lot the taste was not overpowering like I feared it would be, and in my opinion they hit the style right on.

Pours a dark dark brown with a tan colored head that lasted a while and had great lacing. lots and lots of tiny microscopic bubbles just floating to the top of the brew!! aroma of roasted malts, hops and banana. the taste consist of coffee, malts slight hops, and a nice smokie flavor. the mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with the hops showing up in the aftertaste quite nicely. i enjoyed this brew quite a bit! :)

Poured a decent tan head overtop a very dark brown beer. Aroma is ok, maybe. Sure there is lots, but it just didn't appeal to me. Slighty spicy hops, warm toasted malts - needs a hell of a lot more malts. Some sweet malt, a bit tangy and obvious powerful spice - way way to much to enjoy in this style. Way too many hops. Mouthfeel is fairty smooth. You can feel the alcohol burn deep down. Hoppy aftertaste. I actually enjoyed the beer despite the review.

Wow. Very nicely done. I have a new favorite Dopplebock! And, um, I’ll give this a better review when my neighbor isn’t trying to cover up his pot smoke with incense which is wafting into my room... Best I can do for now, though: Nice dark redish brown pour with some head and a decent lace. Scent, from what I can tell, is malt, but there’s quite a bit of complexity to it, just nothing I can pick out right now. Taste is woodsy and malty with a hit of hop presence; and again, more complex than I can describe right now. Palate is thicker than most Doppelbocks with plenty of carbonation. Overall, this is definately worth checking out.

Pours with a deep red-brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a slight roastiness and a nice caramel note. Full bodied, smooth and a touch warming.

Extremely dark brown color. Large tan head. Aroma is malty, oaky and chocolately. A thick, viscous, full-bodied, dopplebock. Malts are nutty, sweet and smoky. Hops are slightly spicy. Aged in oak barrels, this dopplebock has a wonderful smoky flavor that complements the rich malt sweetness. The sweetness is balanced somewhat by the hops bite. Very smooth. VERY nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is sweet.
