Round and malty, our doppelbock lager (German for "double bock") celebrates the style originally developed by medieval monks. Just as the monks appreciated this hearty brew in the late winter/early spring, we savor the flavors of this rich beer along with a double dose of our favorite pastime, rock and roll. In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water. No chemicals or preservatives are used.

Had this last spring a couple times in the bar(n) but never got to the review, thanks to kinger for sending this my way to remind me to get back to work. Deep red brown beer, very clear with a box frothy head. Aroma is a sweet malt bomb which is much the same as the flavor. Nice rich bock, good attempt for an American brewery.

Passed over this seasonal release last year...made sure to get me some this time around. An excellent representation of the style. Clear chestnut body with a one inch frothy tan head and ample lacing. One of the smoothest and easiest drinking ~8% beers I've ever sampled with a silky sweet finish and medium body. Plenty of toffee, toast, buttery cream, figs and licorice to satisfy. Complex and tight, another extraordinarily crafted lager from the big boys up in Cleveland.

Another delightful gem coming from the Bluesman himself. Smells like caramel and wild cherries, oddly enough. Flavor is a truckload of caramel malts. Slight sting of hops and something kind of..terrestrial...I want to say grass, but it is more like...peat. For some reason I didn't think Doppelbocks were so red. Maybe it is just this one. As it warms up, it takes on a bready/cracker-like flavor characteristic, too. A truly excellent beer. Many Thanks Blue Lou!

this will not be my highest rated GL beer, but may speak the loudest of how good this brewer is. why, you ask? this beer was ordered on-line in September. Unfortunately, the ass-clowns at France44 like to sell expired beer. After having an expired Commodore Perry, which was ok, but had faded quite a bit, an obviously old but undated Surly Furious, we had this...expired as of 6/12/11!! WTF?! Surprisingly enough, it smelled incredible. Similar malt profile and aroma to Great Divide Hibernation, my favorite winter beer. The only ill effects were in the feel (overcarbonated, but still nice n rich) and a very slight off aftertaste. But this beer is still quite good. Me thinks it would be one of the best in style around a few months fresher. I'll make it a point to track one down.

From Centerville Carryout, OH: Clear medium brown pout with a damn near perfect sustained tan head an delicate lacing. Huge malty aroma with toasted breads, caramel, pleasant hops, earthy. Huge malty flavor too with a great caramel taste, big, almost heavy but not overpowering, good hops - enough to offset malts and sweetness - just simply a damn good beer. After a summer of IPAs, APAs and wheats, it's really nice to change pace and drink a super-well crafted Doppelbock. Another huge winner from Great Lakes; Ohio should be proud!

An excellent doppelbock, even if it does sound like something out of the Flintstones. Clear ruby colour with a thin pinkish head. Lots of caramel malt, and floral hops in both the flavour and taste. Quite smooth
