More than 1,500 loyal fans of the brewery and band suggested an ingredient idea and the Dead-inspired story behind it. Our favorite was granola, from California Dead Head and craft beer lover Thomas Butler. “The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective,” says Thomas, a chemist by day, homebrewer by night. “The idea is to have a bold pale ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice ‘dank’ hop selection.” American Beauty is brewed with all-American malts and hops, granola and little bit of soul. It’s malty with a big hop kick, and notes of toasted almond and honey round out the flavor profile and balance out the hop bitterness.

Clear copper amber pour with a medium white head, ample lacing. Pleasant welcoming nose and flavors of sweet caramel, very light nuts, ample earthy hops, light biscuit. Nice sweet then light bitter linger. Flavorful brew. Well received by my brothers-in-law.

I wasn't buying this mainly for the label, but neighbor who works at Total Wine & More picked up a bottle towards his bonus. I forgot that it was this strong, and didn't really notice the 9% while drinking. Pale ale flavors....not much hop or citrus going on. Couldn't really find the granola, but tasted some honey. A decent beer that I'd like to say worth the try....but anybody who spends this kind of money will probably be slightly disappointed.

Pours a nice clear amber with a fluffy ivory head - average, but appealing. Malty aroma has definite notes of honey and fruit, plus a hint of toasted bread. Flavor starts with toasty malt and adds apple, pear, bitter hops and honey plus a nutty snippet. Finish blends toasty, sweet malt and bitter hops with fruity and nutty hints, while both fizz and viscosity are average. A beer of beauty is a drink forever.
