Red Chair NWPA is named after the oldest operating lift at Mt. Bachelor here in Central Oregon. And just as the locals line up for that fabled mountain ride, they flock to our Bend brew pub whenever it goes on tap. One thing we've learned, "when the brew pub talks, listen." For the past two decades, the serious beer fanatics down there seldom miss when we've hit on something truly special. What makes this copper colored beauty so wildly popular? As a debut Northwest Pale Ale, it's an adventure all its own. It has a plush body with satiny caramel flavors derived from seven varieties of malt. Yet, despite it all, it remains a hop-forward ale with that distinctive citrusy punch. Just minus any mouth-puckering bitterness.

First time trying this offering.Light orange in color, pours a nice foam top.Great Aromatics, nicely balanced flavor.Clean aftertaste. A very nice offering- even as it heads to the IPA category. Nicely done.

Pours a clear rich red gold. Big bubble lacing. Aroma is lightly citrus and vanilla. Taste starts malty and eases into more dry hop place. The malt components are both complex and subdued. Nice bright supple mouth feel. Particularly nice finish of well balanced refreshing malt/hop.

Aroma - sweet peachy aroma, caramel and citrus hanging around, but the peach (maybe mango) is dominant
Appearance - clear amber body, generous 3-finger white head, light retention, light lacing
Mouthfeel - medium body, medium carbonation, semi-prickly
Flavor - caramel malts, piney hop punch, medium sweetness, very well balanced
Overall - creeping into IPA territory, I'm betting blind this might fool a few people. Satisfying. -

Another fine brew from Deschutes. Amber-gold pour with a large white head. Soft citrus and floral aroma with some caramel and bready malt in the background. Taste is very similar with a mildly bitter finish. If you are expecting a big hop punch, you will be disappointed--this is much more sessionable and won't kill your tastebuds right away.

Another brew that is presently stocked in the fridge at my family's house. Pours an amber colour. Head is substantial. A really odd mix that I found inconsistent. Unbalanced hop-malt combo, fruit forward on the nose. Mildly bitter hop finish.

A solid beer even if it may suffer a bit of identity crisis... I'm not sure this beer really knows which catagory it wants to be in, but it is a damn fine beer by all accounts. Amber to orange color, nice head with good retention and lacing. Citrus, floral and piney resin with a stiff maltiness for backbone. Very nice. Thanks, slowrunner77.

was an IPA, now it's merely an American pale? I'm not complaining, it's delicious, and true to style, by definition. It just seems beer styles are going the way of musical genres. What's next, neoclassical pale ale? the beer: A really smooth, mildly hoppy, flavourful brew. Perhaps it should be put into the 'IPA Light' category.

Nice brew from Deschutes. Very hoppy aroma. Dark caramel color. Thick full mouthfeel. Has substance. Flavor is very bittery hoppy, yet really smooth. Great overall beer.

Sampled on 5/29/2009. This IPA pours a medium red amber color from a 22oz bottle. Large sized white foamy head, with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is resiny and grapefruity with some malt sweetness. A medium bodied IPA. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are grapefruity and piney. It's a fairly bitter IPA with a nice malt backbone. There are really sweet fruity malts balanced by some big aggressive hops. Is this a PNW take on an English India Pale Ale? Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Left over in my fridge after a dinner party. Reddish-copper color, light traces of foam on the edge of the glass. There is a strong caramel sweetness that perfectly mixes with this sharp, hoppy bite. The sweetness disappears and the dry bitter citrus hops remain into the aftertaste. I've never had the IPA version, so I have no idea how it compares. Quite delicious. I will go look out for this.
