Our California Lager is also a single-hop beer, using only fresh, whole Cluster hops, all descended from an old line originally grown in California. Cluster has a long history as a “dual-purpose hop” for both bittering and aroma, which creates a flavor profile like no other. Brewed with San Francisco tap water, fresh from Yosemite, and fermented with our own special strain of lager yeast, our California Lager is kräusened in the traditional manner and lagered in our cellars. The result is a uniquely sessionable lager beer, which is maltier, hoppier, and somewhat stronger than modern American lagers. Its brilliant golden color, lingering effervescence, balanced depth of flavor, distinctive aroma, and smooth finish make this inaugural brew of the Anchor Brewing Zymaster™ Series a delightful tribute to the rich heritage and traditions of California brewing.

355 ml bottle, as Anchor California Lager, from Fakta, Denmark. ABV is 4.9%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Sweetish aroma of malts and floral, herbal and fruity hops. The flavour is medium dry, well hopped throughout, with a fairly bitter aftertaste. A well made lager - simple, but decent.

Pours clear amber with a thick and frothy eggshell head. Crisp, fruity aroma has a malty underpinning. Flavor has nice, crisp malty and pomme tones. Body and fizz are average, but it is good drinking. Could be a good gateway beer to wean people off industrial sludge.

Just another lager - some biscuit a little hops and malt, better than your million gallon average swill brewery. Seems to have funny gummy aftertaste. Not much here for me to rave about. Other offerings from Anchor Steam will get front billing.

I'm not sure what makes a lager "Californian", but this pretty much seems like a standard lager to me. I thought it would involve some more hops, which I would have preferred. Noticing the craft brewers throwing the lager into the mix, but I think it is more to convert the macro-swill drinkers. This is more of a spring/summer beer to me...and even then it would be tough to pay $10-$11 for a 6-pack. Watery and refreshing though.

Thanks to my neighbor for a few cans of this! This is a really nice lager - it could easily be the "go-to" beer. It is clean, crisp, and has a nice full flavor. A great representation of an American Lager.

Sampled on 11/15/2013. This Premium Lager pours an orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is grainy, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied lager. The malts are grainy and slightly sweet. The hops are herbal and spicy. Nice carbonation. A nice version of a ‘pre-prohibition’ lager. Grainy, fruity and slightly spicy. Nice dry finish. I think that this is what an American Lager SHOULD taste like. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly spicy and bitter.

Received fresh from San Fran from my sis from her family vacation: beautiful clear golden pour, near perfect white tall head, lazy lacing all over. Clean grassy hops meet the perfect malt balance - damn near perfect lager. Light and crisp and refreshing. Nice light hops bitter linger, grassy, lightly lemony, plenty of malt sweetness, clean. Definitely one of the best lagers I've had in forever. Very worthy.

Quality evident. Nice toasty malt aroma and flavor. Would have prefered just a touch more hops to balance the malt character that became just a tad generic as the beer sat. Easy, sesionable quencher, though. Definitely has it's place and is well above the norm for the style...
