This is a very traditional example of "Bock" beer which is a German style of dark, strong lager. Ours is made with munich, caramel and chocolat malts from Belgium to give the beer richness and a very deep mohagony colour. German hops balance the chocolat and nut flavours of the specialty malts.

Not a very good looker. Mild aroma of malt, toast and a bit of spice. Flavour is basicly the same as the aroma but just up a notch. Medium mouthfeel.

This beer has a strong taste at first but warms up to you as you progress. Overall a good beer; the aroma is very enticing. I like that the price is right and that the bottle is a fair size.

A very enjoyable beer. Colour was nice and dark. Aroma was sweet with coffee and molasses. Flavour was nicely balanced. With a higher ABV than a Celebrator, why isn't this a dopplebock?

The beer poured a very dark brown, almost black colour (think coca-cola) with a short-lived brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, plums, and coffee. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is very malty, sweet, and very enjoyable. I liked this beer. -

Springboks are South African antelopes.....not beer names. Colour - a solid dark brownish-red, light tan head . Aroma - caramel, molasses, and grains. Mouthfeel - medium. Flavour - sweet malt, some grains, and a weak wisp of yeast. Overall - decent.

Vintage 2010 edition at the LCBO with 7% ABV. Pours a dark brown, cola-looking colour, clear with a red hue. Beautiful foamy beige head that last a very long time and cloud-like lacing. Dark malt aromas of mild coffee, molasses and burnt sugars. Hop becomes apparent as it breaths, with a touch of mint. Smooth silky mouthfeel a light dry finish. Mild, well-balanced, roasted malt with the hop showing up in the aftertaste. Hints of raisins, liquorices and caramel. I really enjoyed this strong Bock as it when down very nicely, for these long winter nights.

Sampled very fresh, picked up directly from the brewery. A darker browny colour, pours with little head. Very disapointing nose, with hardly any of the (expected) malty notes present. Taste, sadly, is a similar situation. Some weak malt but hardly enough to develop a respectable flavour. No such of notice of the mentioned chocolat, or nut flavours. Very empty. Mouthfeel is passive, on the softer side. Very little character and not enough flavour to be at all distinguishable or even worthwhile. fair bit of a dispointment.

Re rating this beer after it’s resurrection as a 7% dopplebock, and re packaging in silk screened pint bottles. Pours a clear dark brown with gorgeous ruby highlights, 2 finger cap retains well and laces....moderate carbonation. Nice malty nose..roasty-toasty garins with fig and plumb undertones. Decent malt presence in front, toasty and some roast, earty noble hopping, ber goes more to roasty in a long finish that ends up fairly clean and dry. A really approachable easy drinking bock with a good flavor profile....they should sell lots of this on tap Pours a deep brown-amber with ruby highlights...frothy tan colored cap...reduces too quickly ..laces the glass weakly. Not much to the nose except some light husk and alcohol. Starts with a light, slightly watery, body where roasted/charred grain astringency teams up with the grassy hops for a dry porter-like "bite" with virtually no sweetness...finishes fast and dry with a little warming and a tinny after taste....seems flat, dry and one dimensional. What is missing in this bock is all the things that make a bock: body, thick chewy malt spine, sweet cocoa/coffee tastes, lagering mellowness and herbal hopping. If I closed my eyes when the bottle was opened I might be led to believe that some one slipped me a Sleeman dry porter...but not a bock. C'mon guys I know you can do better than this. Amsterdam has slipped badly in quality since their move.
