Samuel Adams® partnered with Scharffen Berger Chocolate to develop their newest innovation, Samuel Adams® Chocolate Bock. Tettnang Tettnanger and Spalt hops were hand-selected from the world's oldest growing area and combined with a complex selection of malts including two row Pale, Munich and caramel to create a rich and satisfying brew. This dark beer has a big, malty character that is combined with the subtle sweetness of chocolate. The chocolatiers at Scharffen Berger crafted an exclusive blend of chocolate for Samuel Adams® made with cocoa beans from Ghana called forastero. Samuel Adams® Chocolate Bock was aged on a bed of this chocolate to create its unique layers of flavor. As the beer matured, the fruity, tart, earthy and chocolate aromas were infused into the liquid to give the brew a complex, full-bodied taste with a velvety finish. A hint of vanilla was added to meld the symphony of flavors together.

Due to legal restrictions, Samuel Adams® Chocolate Bock can not be sold in the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Utah.

Pours a thick head that more resembles a stout or porter than a bock. Very foamy with lots of carbonation. Aroma is present, but faint. Scent of cocoa, with no real maltiness in the aroma. For flavor, the sweetness of a bock is tempered by the cocoa powder. Good body. A bit of hoppiness on the palate lingering for a few minutes. An interesting experience, but not for a regular consumption unless you’ve got a fat wallet.

Bottle: Poured a deep dark chocolate bar brown with a light brown head. The aroma is chocolate, dark fruits, and malt. Taste has a raisin or plum front that gently subsides into dark chocolate bakers chocolate. Finishes with a warm sweet malty characteristic.

Large light brown head, good retention with some stringy lace. Clear mahogany color, good looking brew. Very light aromas of cocoa and malt. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Some light chocolate flavors, syrup and bitter sweet with a touch of maltiness. Finish is medium dry, kinda thin with an ever so light roastiness. Was expecting a little more of this brew and its brewer. Jim, you could of kicked it a notch or two or three. Must be trying to appeal to the masses with this one. Nice label.

Rated Jan. 2009. Pours deep dark brown with short lived mocha head. The aroma is full of Bockness like caramel and select dark fruity esters such as plums and figs. Behind the smooth mild esters are notes of chocolate and faint cinnamon. The taste starts with a quick pulse of musty dark fruit followed by rich semi velvety chocolate. Yummy. Then midway raisins, prunes and figs well up and swim along in a tepid pool of chocolate sauce. Pretty nice stuff but tougher to swallow at $15 per bottle in 2009.

Pours out a extremely dark brown with a big thick lingering tan head. The aroma is of dark fruit but not chocolate. The mouthfeel is a little above average. The taste is of dark malt and light hints of chocolate.

Part of their Winter Classics mixed pack, bought in Vegas. Looks like cola, but with a good retention beige head and a little lacing. Aromas of cocoa over roasted malts and hops. Chocolate malt taste with decent hops in the finish. Quite a nice chocolaty brew overall.

Part of the winter sampler pack. Pours a dark brown with a big tan head that quickly disappears. More of a fruity sourness in the aroma than chocolate which is faint at best. More chocolate notes show through in the flavor offset by a fruity tartness. Not that I expected it to be awesome but I was hoping for more chocolate throughout. Doesn't hold a candle to the chocolate beers from Southern Tier and Boulevard.

i love bock beers but not sure about chocolate and bock. it poured a nice dark brown with a thin quickly disappearing tanish head. The armoa was outstanding with a really nice chocolate overtones. i felt beer was ok, not enough chocolate and felt like the bock part of the beer was forgotten.

Pours extremely dark with a gigantic fluffy head. Aroma is a tad bland but it makes up for it. Taste is a combo malts, light hopps and chocolate. Mouthfeel is creamy at the end with an aftertaste of a heavy chocolate. Overalla wonderful beer that should be on everyones wishlist. Love it!
