Barleywine - underappreciated style?

General Beer Discussion by FRETWALKER

Been enjoying Founders' Bolt Cutter at Molly Malone's for the last few weeks, same keg, and Bigfoot's been there for about 2 weeks. Barleywines just don't seem to be moving. It's one of my favorite styles, but I've never claimed to be normal![8D] Looking for a national opinion, here, is Barleywine so far out there, or is it just a Cincinnati thing, Pale Ales or Stouts, and nothing in between?

I'm brewing some now but generally dont buy it unless its for a special occassion. Only a handful of people I know like it and usually it;s like a dessert wine or cognac for my guests. Savor it in small amounts over pleasant conversation.

I enjoy them, but usually only in fall and winter. Rarely drink those big ass beers during the summer and hot weather although that time of year would bring the temp of the beverage up quicker, which is a plus. Right now I've got a pretty good collection of BWs cellaring for a nice tasting during Winter '13-'14.

I think this style gets plenty of attention, even if not at levels from 5-10yrs ago. Those levels were probably overhyped a bit anyway :).

IMO, barleywine is a staple of any beer joint just like a pale ale, stout, amber, etc is on any given line-up (albeit typically seasonal, which is fine). It's not like it's incredibly difficult to make and has to age and age for years like a geueze/lambic. If you're favorite beer maker doesn't make that style, tell 'em you'd like for them to start. They all don't have to be monstrous 14% and aged.

I appreciate BW's hugely, and there are more than a couple aging in my cooler.

Has it been super hot where the Bolt Cutter is on tap? That's the only logical reason I can think of as to why it would sit. They'd go through it in a day here...

...or because the local clientele doesn't dig it. A beer like that would sit for years in a bar here...or until I finally make enough trips to the bar to drink it all.

That is very sad [:(] There was a time when Reno was like that too, but us beer geek have taken over!

Actually, it's been unseasonably cold here this spring, highs in the 30s and 40s (normals in the 50s)
