Last seen drinking Nothing!

About:
Old fart, grew up on local Cincinnati beer. When brewing in Cincy died out, I drank Guinness almost exclusively for close to 20 years. (Now that I think about it, and do the math, it was more like 35 years of Guinness, starting in the early '70s!) Then, a beer tasting event in '07 showed me the delights of craft beer... sort of a "Saul of Tarsus" moment!

Got this in a sampler 12-pack. First thing I notice is, there's no description on the bottle, not even the word, "Lager." I had to go to the brewer's website just to find out it's an american-style lager. It is what it is, a somewhat better-quality rendition of a beer style I've never cared for!

So, the pub owner grabbed me as soon as I walked in the door... "Try this, tell me what you think!" Well, OK. Nice color, head disappeared quickly but left some nice lacing. Full-bodied,for a lager. Sweet malt dominates the flavor, though the hops are discernable. "It's a Coors product!" Say wha'? I had another, which marks the first time in at least 35 years that I've drank 2 of any Coors product, and I'd do it again, in limited situations. It may be "damning with faint praise," but this is the best Bud/Miller/Coors beer in my memory!

Nice color, black with a thin tan head and little lacing. This brew really shines in the nose, even my screwy sense of smell picks out bourbon, vanilla and some coffee. First taste is everything you'd want in a bourbon barrel aged stout; a little heat, a little tang, and toasty malt... but then there's a sourish aftertaste that lingers for a good while. Medium mouthfeel, might be a tad thin for the style. All in all, a decent offering, though there's better bang for the buck to be had. I suspect a year or so in the cellar will smooth out that aftertaste. .......................................................................... 2nd bottle, a month later... Maybe I got a bad one last time, the sour aftertaste is absent this time, and I'm enjoying a pretty solid bourbon-barrel stout.

Nice copper color, from what I can see through a plastic cup. Can't really comment on aroma, my sense of smell is a little screwy at best. Good flavor; nice hoppy tang well-balance by a solid malt base. Most remarkable is the mouthfeel, very full and rich. First IPA brewed by Christian Moerlein; I'd say they got it right, from the get-go!

Best in Class! (For what that's worth) It is what it is, a cheap buzz, and compared to the rest of the genre, it's not too bad. It has some flavor that's not overly offensive and, to its credit, not too bland, either.
